I know I just could not help myself when titling this post!
All seriousness, I was changing the diff fluid and when I got the cover off I found this washer looking thing. The reason I say "looking" is it is flexible, like a compressed fiber or maybe hard rubber. it is not steel. The lines are not ribs, just dark stains on both sides. Since it is not torn and the posi rear performs as it should I assume it did not just fall out and it was left in there by the PO that change out the diff.
But I thought it was just ICP'd to the cover like the magnet in the trans pan? It goes over the dimple in the cover.
The magnet is not very strong so maybe it just fell off. I do have a dimple in the cover and the cover is a aftermarket chrome. There was no metal stuck to it when I pulled it out, Do you Think I will be ok if it is not in?
Crap, I did not put it back in. It was just laying in the bottom. Do you think it will be a problem if it is not in there?
Probably not a big deal. But if it bothers you enough, remove the cover and stick it back onto the lower portion on the cover.
You can probably get away with a rare earth magnet or two, stuck on the outside of the cover, if you really don't want to dump all that fresh lube and additive.
Edit: Aftermarket cover, aluminum? If it bugs you not being in there, remove the cover and put it back. I'd epoxy it back in place.

It is steel. Thanks and yeah I don't want to dup the Synthetic Mobil one as the car hasn't left my garage. I will put it aside and the next time I am under there I will put it back in.
And for the meantime I really like Paulo's external magnet idea ...[/QUOTE] Me too! BTW we do have alligators here in FL, I will have to keep them away from my rearend!!
