9 Bolt Axle Seals
9 Bolt Axle Seals
I was just wondering if there was anyone out there that was proficient in removing and installing the outer axle seals on the Borg Warner 9 Bolt rear end? I was just wondering what it entails. Ihave gear oil all over my wheel wells and have to add fluid frequently to the diff. Thank you.

Unbolt retainer plates, pull axles (may require a slide hammer), remove bearings & seals, installation is the reverse of removal.
Renew the bearings at the same time. More than likely, they're why the seals leeeeek in the first place. Also, BE CERTAIN you have the seals IN YOUR HAND before disabling the car, if you depend on it for transportation. One variant of the seal for one side (pass side I think butt don't hold me to that) is hard to get nowadays; might want to have all possible variants of all the parts on hand, just in case, and return the others unused and in perfect condition for a refund.

Re: 9 Bolt Axle Seals
The bearings will have to come off in order to get the seal off so you should definitely order new bearings along with seals. There is a little bearing retainer collar that you will have to cut/press off as well, when you order the bearings a replacement collar should come with them. I vaguely remember fighting one of the bearing races and having to notch it with a grinder to break it off the shaft since it's pressed up against a shoulder.
I ordered all my 9-bolt stuff off of ratech and it came with the new retaining collars. their site design also makes it easy to see what you're getting and what you'll need

nope no c clips, just unbolt the flange from the axle ends and then use a dead blow to pop the shaft out. the bearings will be holding the shaft in but they’re not too bad to pop free

Re: 9 Bolt Axle Seals
ah you are correct my mistake, as mentioned above the 9 bolt axles are retained by plates on the outside of the housing, don't have to remove c-clips like the 10 bolt.
