Tranny won't shift at full throttle
Tranny won't shift at full throttle
I know this has been asked before but it has affected both my GTA's.
Whenever I floor the gas pedal such as in a race, the car will rev sky high and I have to let off the gas to let the car shift. If I am lucky, sometimes the tranny will shift fine, but most of the time it revs sky high.
What causes this and what will fix it?

I currently have a similar situation, under most WOT conditions it will rev past the tach limit and wont shift out unless I let off the gas. Sometimes it will work fine and shift at 5500. If you were to get a governer calibration kit weights and springs it would most likely cure your problem. B&M makes a good kit $30. I need to get one also.

Forgot to mention the reason people have issues like this is because of a gear swap, the governer is actaully set for a certain rear end ratio. Change the rear end ratio and its not longer set correctly.

Uhh... the tranny is not designed to shift at WOT.It will kick down if you are in the highest gear and you floor it, then it will not shift up until you let off the gas.
It is usually not enough oil going to the clutches
or band. This is partly due to crossleaks and the usual wear & tear on the unit. The Trans-Go Performance Shift kit will solve a lot of these problems, if it does not then time for a rebuild.

Unfortunately my trans is still doing this too. I've had it doing this since it was rebuilt by one trans shop but other then that it worked fine.
Then when I had a new engine dropped in I brought it to a reputable race trans shop where they rebuilt the entire thing. Nope, same problem. They messed with the gov. b/c of my 3.73's and that didn't work. Then they even replaced the valve body at no charge to try and eliminate any possible unseen problems. To this day it still won't shift 2-3 manually or in D under WOT. I can't spend anymore on this unit, now I'm stuck between 2004R or going 5-speed when $$ allows.
Hope it works out better for you guys then it has for me.

I Just took my car to a transmission shop, could be the same problem your having (very reputable and expensive shop) $100 to have them check my transmission out. They said the same thing that I thought; the governor weights are improperly calibrated. I’m surprised they actually said I did a good job adjusting the TV cable with the Holley. I didn’t even tell them about that so I guess they know their stuff. They said it would be around $120 to have them play with weights and springs to get the right calibration. I doubt I'm going to line their pockets with any more money but it good to know that all problems aren’t catastrophic.

when i took my car to the trans shop, they said the same thing. they adjusted my govoner for 2 weeks and still couldnt get it to shift right. so, after 2 shift kits, 2 valve bodies, and a new govoner it still wont shift. this is why im thinkin rebuild......just my 2 cents
Try adjusting the TV cable, my 85 Iroc did the same thing had it rebuilt still the same till i played around w/ the cable good to go.. good luck

If nothing else works, go buy a new cable and install and adjust it. I have replaced 3 of them about every other week at work to repair shift problems. Over time they stretch and cause problems like yours, its worth a try for about $20. Good luck!

Add and additional 1/2 to 3/4 Qt of trans fluid from "FULL".
This worked for me..... No2-3 shift @wot cured.

Ed, have you tried this yet? I'm really curious if this will work, sounds a little sketchy but that's not to say it didn't work on F-Birds car. I hate my 700R b/c of this and if works for you and him then I'd have to try it too since I've done everything else.

I'm curious to hear how he makes out too. Apparently there is a beer in it for me (Canadian beer I hope). This was suggested to me by a friend. And sure as s**t it worked! My trans was/is working properly otherwise, after installing a shift kit. (big improvement n shift quality and timing.) But would have this pesky no 2-3 manual upshift while at the drags. Now that the car is on the street, further testing have shown it to be ok now.
