What would be a better transmission for a 350 TPI 5.7liter engine. I want a manual, and i know a T5 will hold up pretty nicly. Anything else besides that, that maybe will hold up a little bit better under heavy shifting? And if possible, please list price ranges? Thanks In Advance
I don't think that the t5 would be strong enough for a 350, thats why when chevy came out with the 350 in 87,they jamed in the 700R4 cause the t5 would nuke under the 350's torque.
If you want a manual tranny, check into a tranny called a t56.
BUT DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT ONE>

Your options for a manual tranny are pretty much limited to 2 transmissions. The T-56 is a 6 speed taken out of a 4th generation Camaro/Firebird. You need to get all the parts from the donor car, then install them in yourse. The main problems people come into is you need to fabricate/buy stuff. You need a different crossmember, shorter drive shaft, and you need to modify your shifter hole. I think the ballpark price for this is going to be around $2000 if you do it yourself, and you get all the stuff USED(aka 40000 miles on it). The other option for the T-56 is the aftermarket T-56 which is more of a bolt in, but this will set you back $2300 and you still need to fabricate some stuff. Your second transmission is knows as the Tremec 3550. This transmission uses the same clutch, same driveshaft, you need to add spacers to the crossmember(two pieces of aluminum) and a different shifter. The other type of tremec is the TKO. The T-56 both aftermarket and production are rated to about 450 torque. The tremec 3550 is rated at 425 and the TKO is rated at 525. The tremec 3550/TKO will cost you about 2000/2300 accordingly. But of course it will be NEW. If your looking for an easy bolt in job, go with the tremec. If you feel a need for a double overdrive and like to fabricate your own stuff, go for the T-56. Search the message boards for more information on both swaps.
Ben got everything right but the prices.
Aftermarket T-56 $1940
Tremec 3550 $1654
Tremec TKO $1854
It pays to do your homework.
The 3550 and TKO need a new bellhousing and the T-56 requires shorting the driveshaft and tq arm. All 3 come with shifters. Yes the T-56 is a 6 speed but it adds the ratio between where 4th and 5th are on the T-5 and extends the final OD ratio to .62 from the T-5's .68. Spohn makes a crossmember for both applications with or without tq arm mount.
