Motor Swap
Motor Swap
Ok just got a quick question, My dad has a 1986 Camaro with a 2.8 and a 4 speed auto, He is swapping in a 4.3 liter out of a Blazer, Will this work? What does he need to change?

I have a feeling this might go to the swap area, but you picked a good spot to start.

should work just fine....i'd go with 305 motor mounts, a 700r4 from the same truck. depending on what this trucks in he might or might not need to change vin crap LOL. If it's a newer s10 or something he might be alright, since it'll probalby put out less emessions than the 2.8L, and he won't have the issue of it beign from a huge truck that can use different types of emession (less strict) so that'll all depend on where he lives, and how strict the laws are.
It all depends.
Ex.
TBI 2.8 to a TBI 4.3, good
Carb 2.8 to a carb 4.3
Good
carb 2.8 to a TBI 4.3 NOT BAD BUT...
One would need a real 4.3 donor vehicle to mix & match stuff.
from carb to a TBI should also include extra fuel lines for fuel flow back. Electric tank fuel pump, too.
Computer wiring, too.
Used to live in eastern PA.
Current swap laws in PA, I am unaware.
YET if I did this in LA, CA my final product would need to go to smog referee station to be allowed to get it smogged by regular guys.
For this in CA, it costs about $300.
Can you score the entire vehicle from which this 4.3 came from? take the parts from one to other.
It's be better to go to a 3.4 as I am for keeping lots of your current stuff. Plus you avoid the smog nosy people.
For the effort, ya can insert a 350 small block.
Unless this 4.3 mill is free.

The 4.3 is free, He don't have a donor car, It's coming from my cousin's Blazer, Are the Blazers fuel injected??? I am hoping everything goes fine, He plans on doing the swap this weekend.,

Hey man, if you need a hand, let me know, I'm about 20 min. outside of scranton and I know quite abit about TBI if you have trouble.
Read my signature
You cannot slip a 4.3 under the hood of a FBody.
It'll be the hack job from hell.
Serious.
Sell the engine, sell the car, buy a running car.
A WHOLE LOT EASIER
OR SWAP THE F BODY FOR A TRUCK THAT NEEDS A 4.3
Notice I've done two 3.4 swap on vehicles starting with a 60* mill.
Serious, don't waste a second of your time.
IF ya really want that F body to run, go find a used LOW MILAGE running 3.4 & swap it in.
Don't even bother slipping in a V-8 under that V-6 F body.
IT'S SO CHEAPER TO START WITH A V-8 F body to do a V-8 swap.
Sell it.
It won't work right, ever.
Unless ya want to make this F Body a hack job from hell.
Go get the right stuff & do the car proper.
You'll win in the end.
Tranny is different
Wiring is different
Fuel pressure for a V-6 is 40-50 LBS.
Those TBI use only 13Lbs pressure
Accept the education, cause it ain't a put down, unless you want to believe this swap will work out ok.
And look at it this way...
Did GM ever engineer this F-Body for a 4.3 set up?
Do not assume well V-8...
Different.
IF ya had a V-8 powered F body you'd be further ahead to do this hack job from hell.
The right parts are cheap enough, to start with.
It's cheaprer to just sell everything & get a running car for the money saved from selling all this stuff.
I wouldn't even place a cresent wrench to this project.
Again, notice below, two 60* V-6 powered cars to same 60* V-6 powered mills.
Why?
Cause it works right & power is a GREAT IMPROVEMENT.
I wrote the 2.8->3.4 Long Block Swap Boogie.
Do the search, or check the tech threads. You'll see all the details for a proper running long life car.
My Firebird is such a proper job, it passes CA smog & I let me Wife transporting my two year old son, drive it daily. I have about 10,000 on that swap now, too.
I'm giving ya the real skinny.
I THOUGHT assumed your free 4.3 end project was a 4.3 powered S-10 truck, that's why I wrote my response.
And that's why I questioned it to be more clear to myself.
Read the tech thread & do the search.
I paid $800 & $900 for my 44K & 50K 1995 3.4 F Body motors. AND you ONLY USE a F BODY 3.4 a rear wheel drive.
Please don't assume a FWD mill will work properly. Far from the truth.
I've coached about 35 3.4 swappers, already.
Never coached a 90* V-6 swap & I've talked more out of that idea.
The right parts are easy & cheap to find these days.
Enjoy your weekend.

Karl, I generally never question your posts, but:
The 4.3 will fit under the hood. In fact, Ede's working on a 4.3 project right now. Of course it wont' bolt right up, and it would need a new tranny, BUT a 4.3 is basically a 350 with 2 cylinders cut off. Everything that will bolt to a 350 (aside to the obvious like intake, heads, and exhaust) will bolt to a 4.3.
The fuel pressure is an easy problem to fix. There's actually 3 ways. Custom make a new intake for complete EFI. Change the fuel pump to an RS 305 TBI pump. Or, just buy an AFPR.

This is definatly the same guy.
How many different Engines do you want to swap in there.
Dodge, Chevy, what's next.
You wantt put in a ford 4.6?
Give me a Break, I can change IP's if I want too.
This guy is rediculous....
Billy U & I KNOW
With anything it can be done.
I do only clean smog legal swaps.
That's about all I'll comment on.
Yep a 90* V-6 is the 90* V-8 minus two
BUT IT'S WAY CHEAPER TO START OFF WITH A DEAD V-8 car & do a 4.3 swap. 90% of the right parts will be there, too.
I don't like nor endorse/comment on hack jobs from hell.
IF ya going for drag racing strictly & certain class weight V-6 restrictions, have at it!
Daily driver, hack job from hell.
How dead 305 TBI 3rd gen cars are around?
I'd say quite a bit....
On with the show....
