It's brutal, you'll need chain hoists, pry bars, and all kinds of heavy duty equipment. The whole front of the car will need to be removed first. I tried it once and ended up with half my hand cut off (from the wrist up!!).

This is not something that I would ever again attempt. Best thing to do is to pay someone else to do it. That way it's their hand that gets removed!

OK, you got me. Both hands are still firmly attached .

Basically speaking the front of the engine needs to be torn down. Remove water pump, dampener, then timing chain cover. R&R chain/sprockets and reassemble.

This isn't a job that is easy to list out on a text forum. A search _should_ reveal some additional information.

RBob.

Couple of choices!
Want money?
Bring to a scrap metal dealer
Want it gone?
Bring to Pick Your Part & drop off!
Tell them you forgot core paperwork!
Want it gone quicker?
Bring to local side of road or find a dumpster at a garage!
STRIP ALL PARTS OUTTA IT! Worth money!
Balancer REPAIR SLEEVE KIT snout sleeve is the item that's made by FelPro & Pioneer
I'll be back at other house on Monday
See you then?
Remember no cell phone for me!

heres the hardest parts, and problems you might run into...

taking harmonic balancer off....get special puller, still a pain, (puller i rented didnt have right size screws to fit)

putting it back on! (no one locally has install tool) block of wood and hammer was a pain

loosening screws on pulleys without the crank turning....a real pain...just use screw drivers/prybars/whatever....to hold a pully from moving.

be careful not to strip the first threads for the center bolt of damper/crank/pulley....i think i did with the damper puller!! took me darn near 30 minutes to get the bolt back in straight.

**use a straight edge to make sure you line up the timing marks on the gears.......true, probably not neccesary, however, i "thought" i might have put mine in wrong, (i didnt) but the peace of mind with being 100% sure would be worth it to check before you put it all back together.

***the biggest obstacle for me....TOOLS! who the heck put all those huge torx bits on my water pump??...needless to say, i spent way too much time because of trips to the parts store.

good luck

One of the most fun tips I ever used!
I have a sharp metal chissel.
I HIT the chissel on the bottom crank gear at the key way.
Two wacks of 5 pound sledge hammer, the gear cracked open!
ALWAYS KEEP EVERYTHING LINED UP DOT TO DOT
I also have that star socket.
Other tip BRING AN OLD LIFTER from the Pontiac 350 engine.
Place that on center of balancer to prevent the bolt goof up.
Look for search for my timing chain replacement tips, after you get that girls image outta your mind!
PS CHECK YOUR BALANCER NOW!
YOU MAY need new one due to your milage.
It may be coming apart.
My 211,500 Blazer one? Came apart in two pieces when I removed it! I pulled outter ring off by hand! remainder of that Blazer balancer fought me to no end!
I STRONGLY suggest ya grab good one before I help ya.

You may not be able to tell until you have it in your hands if it's history.
NO need for fancy in this engine.
Buy the sleeve.
It's $4 for me & I need to install it on mine on the Firebird. Along with new tensioner & new waterpump.
Pissed I gotta go back in (timing chain area) but then I'll not have to do it again for about 100,000 miles.
That's fine by me.

I don't know what ked is trying to say, but very simply, you will need to drop the oil pan in order to get the timing chain cover off... be careful with this stuff or you'll spring an oil leak... It took me about 14 hours on the firebird which had a 305... about 4 hours could have been cut off from that if we had dropped the oil pan and it wouldn't have sprung a leak... DO NOT wedge screw drivers between the oil pan and block.

Other than that there's no real secrets, the haynes manual should be enough for you to get it apart and back together, just need to make sure the timing marks are right on... for obvious reasons.

Replace all gaskets removed and use RTV everywhere and last but not least don't get impatient, seal everything right the first time and let it sit as long as it's supposed to before driving.

I don't know what ked is trying to say,

I am referring to the fancy balancer Fast RS wants to buy. There is no need for a fancy balancer. Stock works perfect. Especailly when it's in good shape.

Incorrect.
The timing chain cover is separted from the engine block.
Oil pan remains on engine. Oil pan front lip is exposed upon timing chain removal.

The deal with these two screws is an unknown. My '92 has the two bolts from the oil pan up into the bottom of the timing chain cover.

Others, like yourself, have posted that their engine did not have them. Seems to be a. . . just check for them if the cover doesn't seem to want to come off. . .

Other then that, no, the pan does not come off.

Oh, the torx thing too, my '92 water pump has all hex head bolts, no torx, whereas others have torx. . .

RBob.

And what is it about this thread that keeps me wanting to re-visit??

My 1985 Firebird has two 10mm fine threaded bolts from oil pan to front t. chain lip also.
So does my 85 Blazer.
I hear different with some so........

PS MAYBE some others had their removed by those "GOOD" mechaincs!

The 3.4 motors do not have those two bolts thru pan to t chain.
3.4 motors use a flat pan.
I swap the 3.4 stuff & reuse my older 2.8 style everything on the 2.8->3.4 swap boogie!
2.8 has the exposed lip which also exposes to inside oil pan.
