Rear Main Seal

Im pretty sure it is, but is my 86 2.8 a Solid O Rear Main seal or the ( ) *two piece* Design? My clutch stopped working, and my bellhousing is super gooey compared to usual, and my oil level dropped pretty far without there being anything on the ground, so while im doing the clutch im changing my rear mail seal. Ive heard tricks how to do it, but only applies to the O Design. My friend says that in 86 they went to a O design over ( ) , I bet hes right, but I just wanted more opinoins. Thanks

Anyone know how much and what kind of fluid my T5 takes?

T5 = 2.5 qts of ATF fluid - I use Pennzoil Synchromesh, myself.

Your '86 should be a one piece (O) rear main.

My room mate says that he is pretty sure I would be a 2 piece Rear main. I have 4 diffrent people 2 are pretty sure its one way, 2 are pretty sure its the other way. My car was manufactured in June I think, would that make a diffrence?

Did the 1 piece seal come along in 87 with the internal balanced motor?

Here's what ya get
GET THE CAM SHAFT REAR GASKET!! MANDATORY!
YOU GET A 1 PIECE ROUND SEAL for main crank.
INSTALL BOTH!!!!
MANDATORY on the cam shaft item!
Mine on my 3.4 was history & I was leaking like a broken dam.
MAKE SURE YOU GET GM STUFF! No aftermarket stuff items. GM over the counter stuff.
You'll do well now.

why do I gotta do both? I gotta sell the car, so I really dont want to spend much money on it, I just want to get it running. I cant get the stupid transmission off, gotta have someone help me do that.

tranny isn't to bad to do alone. Long as ya got the car off the ground enough. take the tranny off, then the bell. Don't try to do it in one piece. But I did mine alone. Course Ive done auto trannys alone. Those are heavy. But if you got enough room, just drag it up on to your chest and bench it.

I think he mentioned the cam thing as it is the cause of the leak more often. Rear mains didn't go out that often.

Might be worth while to do em both and just tell the dude. Ya could of just ignored it to get it sold but did him a favor and changed it while you had it down.

So that's why you ain't budgin on price.

Ya, I took the 4 bolts out to do it first without the bellhousing. WTF is that big counter weight looking thingy? that mounts directly under where the shifter goes up, and points back? And how do I take it off?

It bolts on somehow. I know its removable. Its a counter weight.

When ya shift n jump on it, The rear of the tranny wants to lift. That weight helps hold it down. as the up n down motion can cause damage or unwanted vibration.

The gasket is a few dollars more.
I wish I knew of this cam gasket detail when I just swapped in the 3.4 in my Blazer.
Oh well....
