Uncatted 3.1?

Anybody actully ditch their cats on their V6? What's it sound like? Can I actully still pass a sniffer test with an Air Pump and EGR but no cat?

First you fail visual part of the test. then your HC count would be way abov the max amount allowed.

As for the sound.

When I blew mine off due to a rotted pipe it had a killer sound. But that was with out the muffler as well. When i pulled into the muffler shop the guy looked at me with a smile on his faced and said there was nothing wrong. He was jocking of course

when i was tryin to remove my CC i couldnt pull it off the y-pipe cuz the pipes had been crimped together by the u-bolt. i gave up and drove it home from the inlaws house with it just blowing out of the cat and the cat-back disconnected. sounded deep at idle and low rpm, but got real annoying when i got on it. when i took it to a shop he said it had a nice sound. i just yeah until u hit the gas.

oh yea... love how the 60* sounds without a cat or muffler...

course i have aluminum heads so that might change the sound a little..but you can see if you like it for yourself:

I passed smog with a gutted cat (2 1/2 pipe w/ cat shell migged on) in Ventura CA back in 96 with a 90 3.1 multiport and a 3" cat back with flowmaster 80 series.

I thought it sounded boss.........

Not sure if carb cars can pass without it, but f i can.

hella funny

although i never realy saw the point in running without a cat . . a modern cat doesnt really restrict the exhaust at all, does it? unless you were trying to save $$ i dont see why you wouldnt put one on. just my .02 i guess.

Mine was that honeycomb looking inside and was about half plugged up with crud. I was in the Navy at the time and money was definetely the issue.

And then there's always that I-don't-want-to-because-you-say-I-have-to thing. It comes and goes from time to time....

I have a gutted cat on my V6, i also have a Dyna Flow muffler and I hate the sound my car makes. I posted on here about going flowmaster but I would gut it. It sounds terrible once you step on the gas....

Magnoflow product. Direct fit & it did.
Get the decent part for the effort ya need put out to do the job right.
Leaky exhausts & rattling exhausts really kill the chance for a good looking girl sitting besides ya.

And here I was thinking it was my paint job all this time

I had my cat gutted for a while, didnt make a noticable sound difference. It took away low end, and gained a hair of top end.

I now off an offroad y-pipe with headers. Did all that at once. Sound changed alot, but I think it was more from the headers.

D'oh! Maybe that's my problem right there! I just haven't had the cash (between insurance and head gaskets these past couple of months) for a new $110 cat.

BTW, anyone know how in the world to properly seal off the FRONT of the cat? When I get a new cat (I'm getting sick of the twin leaks it has), I'm still going to have a leak at the y-pipe connection, and the y-pipe has not been mangled or damaged in any way. I have one of those fancy strap-type clamps on it now (Guaranteed to seal leaks... riiight ) and it still leaks.

just have it welded. i tried all sorts of stuff there but couldnt get anything to stay on with the amount of heat. when i had the header installed i took it and got it welded there.

That might work, since I've had to remove the cat and y-pipe in one piece before. The biggest PITA of doing it that way is getting enough ground clearance . Now I just have to wait until I satisfy my insurance company...

Any 2.8 or 3.1, even 3.4 for that matter sounds just fine without a cat, until it hits about 2,500rpm then it starts to get raspy. Not a good raspy either. It's probably about the most annoying exhaust note imaginable. Anyone that can tolerate it for more then a week has a threshold for pain beyond my comprehension.

Ok, it might not be that bad, but yeah it is. Don't do it.
