Re: pulling the engine out
Replace rear cam seal. It right abouve the rear main seal. When I pulled my engine through it was a rear main but ended up being both the rear cam seal and rear main.
Replace distributor shaft O ring.
Replace oil pan gasket / Freeze plugs
Delete collant by pass lines.

Replace the whole engine with an LS1 LOL. But I would get a cam, Headers you can do but your smog pump wont be connected to the headers. Add bigger fuel injectors.
Just curious how many miles are on your motor because I believe I am having the same problem.

Re: pulling the engine out
maybe i missed it, but if you dont have smog regulations, you dont have anything to worry about. cam is a good start, with a good mechanic at your disposal, headers are another good upgrade (as well as dynomax catback and some high flow cat to go with those). you can pull the valve covers and put on a higher ratio roller rockers, put in a 180 t-stat, delete the AIR pump (if you have it). there are a ton of upgrades you can do, just do a search and you can find more info that you ever wanted, i know i have, lol.

Re: pulling the engine out
I know Pacesetter makes headers for your vehicle that have connections for your smog pump, here in California, the smog pump, must be hooked up and functioning, although you can find a smog shop that will over look if you want to chance a smog pump delete. I'm not sure, but headers might even be illegal for street use in CA, leave it to those tree-huggers to kill the manly spirit of cars. LOL

Re: pulling the engine out
If money is "no object" Throw on a turbo system, that will pull some power out of that V-6.
Seriously though, if you can get rid of the emission stuff.
