Thinking of going v8... what are my options?
ok, so I'm thinking of buying a v8 motor. Would anyone advise against this? What are my options? I'm used to my 02 vic's 270 HP and 25 mpg highway. Is there an engine that'll give me comparable efficiency? Can my transmission handle more power as-is? What will I have to buy besides an engine? I want to go with a junk yard motor that runs - drop it in and have it re-built at a later date. I never eally drive the RS - It's just a project car for me so my options are wide open. Thanks!

You will have to switch the engine and tranmission. V6 are 60 Degree and V8 and different. You will also have to switch the computer and wiring. V6 springs wont handled the v8.
Engine mounts would have to be changed. Radiator probably would have to be changed also. Its just not a drop and go.
It would be better to get a donner car that runs that way you can have all the parts that you would need

Look in the engine swap forum at the V6-V8 Swap sticky. It's been very well documented there.

You're best off buying a 4th gen V8 car that's been wrecked for this application. The LT1 or later LS series engines get better mileage and horsepower in a reliable package. You will need the wiring, PCM and everything else so there you go.
The nice thing about wrecked cars is that they still have most of the bolts and wires in them. Once you get everything you need from the car, strip it, sell the good parts that are left on ebay with no reserve, and throw the rest away!
Guaranteed good way to get what you want done on a budget!

just sell the car and buy another car. It will be far cheaper. You would have to upgrade the suspension also for the added weight. need a new cooling system foir the larger motor... it goes on. Just sell the V6 and buy a V8.

Most of those parts will go from the 4th gen to the third gen. Especially if it's a rear end collision or rollover!!

ok, wow. I honestly thought I jsut needed an engine. That is way to hard. Heck no. I'm not doing it. Thanks for the input guys. I'm just going to juice up my v6 - there is a whole thing about in the FAQ - only thing - why can't I find headers?

Pacesetter are the only company who makes headers now. Look them up on their website or look on summit for alot of parts.

Check the last page of this thread www.thirdgen.org/techboard/v6/386343-after-market-parts-60-a-2.html for a list of aftermarket parts. Keep in mind that you're not limited to that list, there's a huge resource of factory parts for this engine that greatly outperform the early equipment and can be had dirt cheap from junkyards. You save about 100lbs over a v8 by keeping the v6 and get better handling to boot.

imo get an LS1 w/ a 6spd you'll get just as good mileage as your vic, and way more power. the only problem its an expensive swap 3000-8000 depending which engine you get. LS2 is an awesome choice w/ that displacement on demand.

Re: Thinking of going v8... what are my options?
I'm definatly going the powerful v6 route - I've been looking around the forum at some turbo posts - I think it's more in my price range. The only thing not addressed? What will a turbo do to my mileage? I would assume better b/c the engine would become more efficient?

Re: Thinking of going v8... what are my options?
Most will tell you that it will go out the window, but it really depends on the engine package and your driving habits. You can build a turbo engine and still get decent mileage if you can keep it out of turbo's spooling point- where the engine's doing most of the sucking, but if you're always tipping the throttle fueling goes way up with boost. Engines run much richer under boost, but can be made to run leaner at low load and boost levels where detonation isn't a problem. Aluminum heads, intercooling, a slightly oversized turbo on low boost- anything that keeps heat down will enable you to run leaner with careful tuning.
