Car dies at idle and..

ok.. obviously it's a v6... it's in an '86 camaro SC... 5 speed.. yada yada..

pretty much the car has had the problem for a while now.. but it only happens sometimes.. i finally found a g uy who really wants to buy the car, but he says he doesn't want to do the deal unless i fix this.. i was told it's a leak in the vaccum lines... and i can check into that.. but i had some idiot at shucks say it was a map sensor.. when my car didn't even have one. ('86 had a MAF)

anyone have any other ideas?... or you agree that it's the vaccum lines

Re: Car dies at idle and..

Could be many things. Start off with inspecting the vacuum lines. And also, check for any codes.

Re: Car dies at idle and..

I read the thing on testing codes.. think you could put that in more simplier terms.. like.. how to read the flashes and stuff?

Re: Car dies at idle and..

I would definately chech the vacume lines at the back of the motor. I had the same problem with my 2.8l firebird, there was a rather large T shaped line at the back of the intake that was not connected...
GOOD LUCK!!!!

Re: Car dies at idle and..

i looked and i noticed a cracked line.. but it looked like it ran out of the firewall, then right back in.. idk if that was it, but it had that "t" thing connecting the 2 lines idk if that was it or not..

Re: Car dies at idle and..

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing.... the T thing im talking about is kinda like a gromet, one part connects to the motor right behind the intake near the base of the distributer cap and then it has 2 lines coming off that.... just check to make sure all the lines are connected and that they are not cracked... btw you might want to replace the one you found that was cracked

It can't get any simpler. Follow the instructions to watch them flash and you'll understand.

I would suggest replacing all of the vacuum lines, one by one. Go buy some rubber hose from the nearest parts stores(you'll need varying sizes). Disconnect a segment of hose on the car, replace the segment with a new hose. Repeat until all of your vacuum lines are replaced. Replace the plastic ones with windshield wiper lines, also from the parts store. (the originals are not available anymore) Make sure to pay attention to the large vacuum line that runs between the MIM and UIM, right on top of the fuel rail. It connects into the LIM at the very back of the engine and is close to impossible to inspect without the UIM off. The vacuum system is not nearly as complicated as it looks; just remove your IUM, grab a line, and follow it, then follow whatever it hooks into and so on. EVentually it all just connects into the motor at the back on the LIM. If your problem persists after replacing EVERY line, come on back and we'll have another go.

Also, this thread may be of use: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...m-diagram.html (for the diagram to help you find them all)

(UIM = Upper Intake Manifold, MIM = Middle Intake Manifold, LIM = Lower Intake Manifold)
