3.1 to 3100 swap
Yes, I know this topic has been covered, but I'm pretty sure a search won't help with the one question I have:
What about the exhaust? How do I swap over the exhaust from the donor car (97 Lumina) and get it to work in the Bird?
I ask this because I guy in my auto tech class wrecked his Lumina a few days ago and, due to it's age and the amount of damage, will probably be totalled. He has told me that I could get the heads and intake (and anything else I need) off of the car for $200, but I have that exhaust issue I need an answer for.
Also, does the 3.1 block have the provision for the CKP sensor, or will I have to use an external reluctor wheel? Keep in mind that I am not 100% positive as to what year car my 3.1 came from, but I am pretty sure it's a 91.

No RWD 3.1s have providions for the crank position sensor, only the 3.4 does. You will need an external reluctor wheel.
You will not be able to use the FWD exhaust manifolds.
The best or easiest solution is to get headers and modify the flanges, to accept the wider bolt pattern and D-shaped ports.

Ooh, good. Now I can get those Pacesetter headers I've been wanting.
Any suggestions on the external trigger wheel?

Re: 3.1 to 3100 swap
I understand that there needs to be a custom bracket for the CKP, but do I really have to cut my own reluctor wheel, or can I find one from a different vehicle?
BTW, the Search function is worse than it used to be... for me, anyways.

You could have the 3.1 block machined to accept a 3.4 crank/sensor too, but you might as well fab up an external trigger. Search function sucks, hu? I try to find something and I get about 50 unrelated threads and maybe 1-2 relevant ones.

Re: 3.1 to 3100 swap
I definitely agree about the search thing. I probably spent an hour looking up some useful info under "hybrid v6" and didn't really find anything.
BTW, I hope I can get something working with the 3.1 block and the 3100 CKP. The thing is that I KNOW that engine has a new CKP sensor--I am the one who got all tore up putting the fugging thing in when the car died in September.
Also, I am going to be procuring an extra 2.8 FWD block (when I get the engine back into the car I am driving at the moment, not the Bird, and get the crap out of the trunk) so I can maybe find some way of mounting some of the FWD blocks to our RWD platforms.

The full FWD swap is a little more involved. Driver_10 at 60*v6 and FullthrottleV6 has done a 3400 in a 4th gen, and won't be that much different for us. You will definately want a tubular k member to cut down severly on the fabrication.
bl85c, I looked at modifying a 3.1/2.8 block to use the reluctor on the crank, but didn't feel comfortable with the lesser webbing on the older blocks.
Perhaps Six_Shooter will help me get rolling on the fabrication of a wheel since he has made one before. Working 12-14hrs a day has made it hard for me to sit down and replicate one.

Re: 3.1 to 3100 swap
Well, looks like I'm not swapping after all. The guy's parents decided to junk the car before he had a chance to take anything off of it, so I won't be able to get any parts. That is, unless the school wants to get rid of one of the other engines we use in classes (they give the parts they don't want away for nothing because they are completely useless afterwards).
BTW, I was poking around on eBay last night and saw a 3.4 timing cover with a crank sensor attached, but I'm not 100% sure whether it was for RWD or not (said it was from a 94 Camaro on the cover, however).

The trigger wheel for it is attached to the rear of the harmonic balancer. This has no use in a swap, like you want to do.
Yes, the reluctor has to be custom.
