FWD 3.4l v6

Couple of questions. I'm new to the forums, and cars in general, so my apologies if this sounds stupid.

The sticky for v6 engine swaps says that FWD engines are a pain to put in and require a bunch of work. I was just curious what type of work they require to make them fit? O searched the forums and didn't find much.

I just found what I consider to be a nice deal on a 3.4 v6 in craigslist, but it turns out its the LQ1, which is FWD. It does put out a nice 215 hp according to wikipedia. Here's the ad: http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/pts/955483228.html What would you guys consider a good deal on a 3.4?

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

To start off not sure if the transmission will bolt up, along with custom motor mounts and the starter is on the wrong side. You might want to check out the 3.4l RWD motors not as much power as the FWD but everything bolts up even your intake. You could always turbo and easily reach that 215+. Good luck with your search though!

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

The LQ1 is a DOHC. Even More difficlut to swap than a FWD pushrod motor.

Easiest thing for us to do at the moment is to use the top end and pistons from a FWD in our blocks. 3.4 Fbody RWD motors are better equipped to do so with the DIS reluctor wheel in the crank.

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

I have one of them motors partly installed in a third gen. It needs custom motor mounts, two notches in the crossmember for the alternator and a/c compressor, and the cam boxes hit the firewall, wiper motor, and heater box. The V6 trans will bolt right to the motor. The starter is on the drivers side and gets in the way of the oil filter. I may go back to working on the swap after I finish my LT1 swap.

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

Moving the engine forward an inch would help most of the problems but would probably create more problems. I will try to get some pictures of the mounts I made later today. I believe in the picture the engine is sitting on stock mounts.

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

nice thanks, yeah please if u could get some more pics of mounts and what is hittin on the crossmember. i have a soloution for the heater box already but it requires ditching the ac
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/fabr...-c-delete.html

how much is it hitting the firewall in one spot,(big hammer to knock it in or does it need to be cut and notched)

wiper motor hell my wipers dont even work no big loss there

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

you could probably hit the firewall with a big hammer to clearence it and it only hits the crossmember if you want to use the stock a/c compressor mount and alternator mount.

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

hmm ok that poses one problem, but dosent seem like to big of a deal to somehow move the alt.

oil filter can be relocated using a remote oil filter system so thats pretty easy

lol i think u just stoped me from putting a twin turbo 4.3 in my car.

dam junkyard closes in 5 mins lol or id be running over there to see what they got.i know they had abunch of cars with the lq1 in it last time i was there 3 weeks ago

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

hmmm quad cam would be sweetass, that thing will sing :-). i considered getting a quadcam 3.0 v6 cosworth lump, they made for some old ford granadas - uk - 210hp stock , lots of work using an engine built for a ford but the end result would be a cosworth firebird and that just sounds sweet :-)

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

the heads on the lq1 outflow any other 60* head by tons, the expsensive part of building one of thos emotors is cams, u pretty much have to go custom and instead of paying for one cam ur paying for 4.

i looked into this motor a while back but never thought much of it cause i didnt know a whole lot about it but now that ive seen somone else actually get one into a f-body, i deff think this is the way im going to go.

gonan suck to lose the dizzy though, i liked being able to have antilag and spark cut, if i do the lq1 ill have to goto a ford edis wasted spark system, which u cant do a spark cut on, but aparently with an msd box u can so im still looking into that

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

Finally got a chance to take a picture of the mounts I made. The stock mounts would work with a little work. If I remember correctly the left mount bolts on and the left one needs a tab welded to the front. The mounts I made clearance for the alt and a/c comp. I move the frame mount back 1" to allow for the a/c lines and mount bolt. Mike

Re: FWD 3.4l v6

Thats funny to see someon mention cosworth, I drive a cosworth vega right now that I am swapping for a 1992 firebird ragtop with a v-6 and looking at those pics it looks like a v-6 version of my 4 cylinder I have right now(till the guy gets the bird out of the mud in his driveway) but I tell you the cosworth vega equipped with the twin cam , 4 speed and 3.73 posi is badassfor a 4 banger,Timmy
