EGR Valve and Solenoid
Hi, my egr valve and solenoid are damaged, i need to replace them, i have read some unfinished threads, where people says that u can use any solenoid, (LT1, Cavaliers, Sunfires) it will work if wire properly, however nobody on these threads reply anything about if they had succes on this, also i have read some threads about the expensive of this parts, i have an 87 SC 2.8 mpfi, here the solenoid cost new 220 dls, and the valve 50 dls, i was thinking, to save money using a solenoid from these another cars, and buy the valve new, do u guys think, it works or not?

Re: EGR Valve and Solenoid
The short answer is that no, you can't use those parts, unless you can find something similar to what you have already. Yes, a lot of those pre-89 FWD cars had the vacuum-operated EGR, but they may not have used the same solenoid, seeing as how most of them run the computer from the 90-92 V6 third gens.

Hi i went to all junkyards, i cant find anything, so i have to buy the new one that cost 220 dls? I forget the idea of use another solenoid from other car? Or should delete the egr system, by the way i dont take the car to nox or smoog test, but if its not soo expensive i like to keep the egr working, thanks

Re: EGR Valve and Solenoid
Can you find any 4-cylinder, non-overhead cam, Cavaliers, Sunbirds, Sunfires, or anything like that in any junkyards down there? Just to the right of the throttle body (physical right side of it, not the passenger's side of the car), there is an EGR solenoid that is held on by one or 2 bolts. Get that and the wire plug that goes with it. As long as you don't mind having the Service Engine Soon light on all of the time because this solenoid doesn't have a vacuum sensor, it will work. And the valve can be found on just about anything produced before 1990. Just make sure the valve you get looks EXACTLY like the one that is on the engine now, because there are several different valves and they all work different.
Or, if you really wanted to cheat and not have to worry about the solenoid, but still worry about that SES light, you can simply replace the valve and run the vacuum line from the throttle body straight into it. The valve will only open when the throttle plate is opened, because there isn't enough vacuum on the line normally to overcome the spring tension in the valve.
And yes, you can use a 9v battery to test the solenoid. Any of them, in fact.

And yes, this will definitely throw a code until the ECM is reprogrammed to not use the code 32.

Re: EGR Valve and Solenoid
The solenoid acts as a switch to keep the valve from opening until the engine coolant reaches a certain temp and also to tell the computer when/if the valve has opened.

No, that would make it the same as the pre-90 models without the 3.1
