86 2.8 vs. 87 Monte SS....can it be done?

I don't know if you guys remember, but a while back I put up a post asking if my 2.8 Camaro could beat my friend's Monte SS.
Well, he's making it really difficult for me. Butthead's got let's see...open headers, two 2 chamber flowmasters, no tailpipes, 350 turbo tranny, 3.73 posi rear. But he's still got the stock 305 under the hood, for now.
Ok here's what I got, or will have. K&N air filers, with those side flaps removed from the air boxes. MSD 6A ignition, MSD GM Blaster coil, MSD Heli-coil wires, Catco cat converter, Dynomax cat-back (2.5").
So, what are my chances of showing him my IROC tail lights?

Your chances are very slim....I have a 2.8/3.4 conversion in mine...and I kept up with my buddies 86 monte...with no mods...but if his car is in good running condition..and he is a good driver..you do not have a chance...sorry...

Well lets not start another flame war here, but You stand no chance. He has a lot more power and torque that you. You car does not weigh that much less and he has more mods than you do and we all no bigger engines respond to mods better than the smaller ones. So unless he ****s up real bad, he will beat you. Though you never know what might happen, he could blow a tire, foul a plug, throgh a rod, and well anything could happen. Just race him and find out.

Oh and another thing if he has "open" headers, the muffelers won't matter because the exhaust would't be flowing to them anyways. If he has his headers open he is probably hurting himself.

I'm not lookin for trouble or flames, just honest opinions. If your honest opinion is that I'll get my @ss handed to me, fine.

Not wanting to start any flames, but you might keep up with him through 1st gear. After that, he'll be gone.

well, he doesn't have that many engine mods, but he's still got more HP, now say we cancel that out because of the cars weight, and the engines weight, but then there's still another problem. He's got Torque out of his @ss, so you might find some difficulties there. Now, you've done some good ignition upgrades, which is nice, but you're not going to be expecting to make 25-30hp off of ignition, and K&N's with the little "flappy thingies" removed may be good for say 5hp. Still not in range with the Monte's headers (if they're open headers, that might not be good for him though) dual flowmasters, dual exaust, and 3.73 gears. If he was running say 2.73 like some 305 firebirds then i'd say you've got a chance, but the 3.73's alone will make up for the HP difference. In other words, if the monte was running a 2.8L with headers, exaust, and 3.73 posi, he's outrun your firebird most likely, and with the help of nearly 100lbs of t.q, he'll spank ya.

I've actually done this....maybe I can shed some light....

Should you be able to keep up? No way...a stock Monte SS was running 0-60 in under 8, while you are at about 10, even with your mods. But hey, I didn't only keep up with my buddy's old '85 SS, I beat him!! Granted, his carb wasn't quite right....but if your car is flawless and his is a little rough, it might not be as bad as some think. But if both of you are running perfect, he's got ya...

Well, I feel if he were to accidently forget to put it into gear on the line, maybe you might stand a chance for the first 30 feet...
I havea friend who has an 86 Thunderbird, and the engine is built up for racing, but the Tranny is slippin, well he raced a newer Thunderbird (92 I believe) Stock, with a good tranny, and the 86 won, that was because of the drive,

Ifyou can drive and he can;t you might show him your tail lights, but if he can drive your screwed.

I brought this topic back to tell you guys something. I drove the rival Monte SS this weekend, and right now winning the race is not impossible. Sure, it would take off if you floor it at 30 or so, but its got nothin off the line. My Grand Am has more from a stop. A friend of mine says that since he has open headers, 2 cats, 2 1 chamber Flowmasters, and his pipes stop BEFORE the rear axl, he may not have enough back pressure. So, anyone think I got a chance now? Well, before he drops in the 350 that is.

Nope, you will get to 30 pretty quickly, then he will pull past you and leave you behind.
Open headers Means no pipes attached to them thats why they are open. What are you refering to when you say OPEN HEADERS?

Well, unfortunately this race won't happen. My friend blew his intake manifold gasket and he thinks his fuel pump is going. So he took the car off the road to drop in a 350, and I ain't even gonna try to beat that with a 6.
