V6 Cam
V6 Cam
I am planning on doing a complete rebuild and I want to know what cam I should use. I have an 82 with the carburator. I will be running a 700r4 and a HEI ignigtion. THe heads will be milled and ported and polished. I will run my compression around 9.5 to 1. Thank for any help

Think about picking up a set of heads from an '85-up multiport injected V6. In '85, the heads got bigger valves. (In fact in '85, because of that and the fuel injection system, the 2.8 became the "High Output" 2.8. It lost that HO designation in '86, I guess because it wasn't "new" anymore.) Those heads would help airflow by themselves; if you do a port job on 'em, you're really getting some air inside!
The '82 also got a mild cam, compared to the '85-up 2.8 multiport. A stock 85-up cam would wake your engine up by itself. Crane has a few cams, as does http://www.spoperformanceparts.com and http://www.pawinc.com . The problem is, NOBODY's got a 2.8 cam that's APPROVED as 50-state-legal for emissions. Cams might exist that do pass the emissions levels, but none are certified to do so. I don't know if your part of the world has adopted the dyno emissions test like my NJ has; so this might be something to think about. Past that, I can't recommend a cam... for fuel injection, yeah, but I don't know about for carb. PAW has a ton of cams for carb'd 2.8's, each with different specs.. I think their "own" home-brand has 5 or 6.

Thanks. We do have the dyno emissions tests here in Connecticut and the people that run them know nothing about cars. I heard that aluminum heads would not fit the longitudal mount engines. Is this true?

That is correct...the FWD heads will not fit the longitudinal-mounted 60 degree V6s.
On a side note, doesn't CT have some sort of cut off point for emissions testing? I know in MA, '84 and older don't need to pass. I believe CT has the same smog laws as MA!!

NO FWD ALUMINUM HEADS WILL WORK FOR THE F-BODY APPLICATION.
NONE!
How to get around all of this...
Go get a 3.4 engine from a yard & install it!
Shame you have a carb, tho.
The MPFI really makes this engine a road racing stunner. Ask the Porsche I kept up with (faster than posted limit).
Of course he won, it was a safe situation.
OR go get a 1985 car to play with. And slip in the 3.4 block!
You would love the difference!

I like carbs no computers and you can adjust them to how you want it and you can swap them out and have fun with them.

I wish my girlfreind had a carberator. That way I could Make the throttle body smaller for increased velocity (if you know what I mean).

You need the throttle body smaller to compensate for a smaller injector? J/k.

Just so I'm not called a BS'er (again)... if you look at the Summit Catalog, there's a 50-state-legal notation for the Crane Cams. That doesn't cover the 2.8 cams. The CARB EO #'s listed are for the v8 camshafts. You can use this website to look up the CARB Executive Order #'s: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermk...es/devices.htm
