hey, if you guys ever come up to cape ann, tell me. there is NO ONE around here to talk car stuff with!
Your 2.8 should be able to hang or even beat that 3.4. Gotta remember the 4th gens got a little weight disadvantage to the 3rds. Also, the 3rd gen V6's are geared better than the 4ths. Unless he's got 3.42's out back and is a good driver, U've got a good match. Good luck!

Cheat.
Steal his car.
Swap your engines.
Give the car "back" to him.
Then see his expression when you really beat him.
He won't be able to tell the difference between the 2.8 & the 3.4 block, under there!

Ked85 - Yea, he'll be able to feel the difference. Ask Graeme, he always tells me that the motor in my 94 3.4L feels strong.
Graeme - hate to point this out, but you are wrong on the 3.4L stats.
its 160hp/200tq for a 1993-1995 3.4L V6 F-body.
AntiVTEC - some 2.8L cars might be able to beat 3.4L cars. but its not all because of the gearing. 3.42's dont give much advantage over 3.23 gears. a little but not much, quick acceleration will lose you in the top end (3.42's dont get as good when you go higher than 70(could be wrong on this figure) or so) and so on and so forth. GM put 3.23's in the 4th gens for good highway crusing speeds.
------------
ok now to answer the question:
gemmefire - you have a 2.8L or a 3.1L? you didnt specify. what kind of cam do you have? (lift numbers - stock 3.4 = .472in/.475ex) depending on all these factors, things could go for or against you.
all in all, its more likely that you will win because he has only that one modification, while yours is more substantial. are you sure he doesnt have any other mods? just curious..

I've driven a '95 3.4, and it felt like I was driving my RS with a nicer dashboard and a console

The 3.4 is faster in theory, but the 2.8 may be faster in actuality

The gears in the 87 T-5 are different from the 4th gen T-5. 3rd gen T-5's can keep the motor in a better range than the 4th's can. Not so sure about 3.42's not having much advantage over 3.23's. My bro has 3.42's in his 4th genner and that bad boy will get up harder then any 4th genner with 3.23's that i've ever drove. Plus, his car is stock. The number might not be too much different but when it comes to keeping the motor in the sweet spot, it just makes the difference. Just ask some of the 4th genners with 3.23's how their car feels when they're on the gas and they shift from 1st to 2nd. Seems like they kinda die for a moment. Aight then... payce!

I've got 3:42's in my Firebird.
That thing flies!
Sweet Spot?
Try G-SPOT!
100mph, going from 70, in a blink. Freeway crusing, barely breathing.
Tach?
Not hooked up, yet, but soon.
70ph is about 2200rpm

I have an automatic.
I tend to 1-2 upshift at 50MPH....
Opps, that's the Corvette automatic shift.
I like seeing what's going on with gauges.
Besides, something to watch in traffic. All the pretty girls have the windows tinted. But, those few in convertibles....YES! Some days, you just gotta love SoCal.
