Valve Covers Leaking!!!!

I hope somebody here can help me with what I think is the problem. Last year when I had my tranny mounts replaced, the mechanic said there was a pool of oil built up on the tranny itself and it was probably dripping from the top of the block. Well, I ignored it for about a year and when my starter went out, I had my buddy look it over and by tasting the oil off of the dipstick, he concluded that it had gas in the oil and that it was the valve covers leaking. Does anyone know if he's right and if so, how easy or hard will it be to replace them myself. Thanks guys

Have you tried to see where the leak is coming from.It could help alot, your friend tasted the oil and it has gas in it,you might also have a fuel line leak too.

Another place to check for a leak is the distrubitor...this topic has been discussed before. I thought that my passenger valve cover was leaking and after further searching it is my distrubitor..I just haven't gotten around to fixing yet..I beleive that Tom or Ked can help you out more..

Thanks for the advice guys. It seems to be leaking from behind the block, like up top near the valve covers and come to think of it, only the passenger side behind the block all the way down is covered in oil. Hopefully tommorow I will have time to check into it and look around.
Also, what kind of power/performance will I get if I install a shift kit. Thanks again guys.

My simple solution is to get out the distributor, AFTER you set it at number one TOP DEAD CENTER.
Clean back there with brake cleaner and such.
REAL GASKET FREE & DRY.
Same with distributor.
CLEAN IT.
IN FACT REBUILD IT RIGHT NOW!
Pop out the roll pin, in the bottom, separate, clean, relube, replace the middle coil piece and maybe the modular, reinstall using a SMALL BLOCK CHEVY DISTRIBUTOR GASKET.
FITS PERFECT guaranteed NEVER to leak!
Apply film of black RTV to both side of gasket, A FILM! THIN!
Insert distributor.
Firm down & test drive for proper timing.
Like that spot?
Tighten down and LEAK FREE FOREVER!
AND you NEVER need remove your distributor again, it's freshly rebuilt, good for another 100,000 trouble free miles.
AND
YOU GET BETTER PERFORMANCE
AND
BETTER GAS MILAGE
As the final plus for this job & details.
You win, big time!
IF ya need parts
ask for Saul at (in subject line)
www.kayauto.com
Tell Saul, Karl sent ya.
He'll beat anyones prices and mentioning me guarantees it.
Or get a hold of me!

Or, of course, just replace the O-ring on the distributor body. It's a "1 inch inside diameter" o-ring... find it at any "real" parts store. In fact I even found a pack of 5 at Pep Boys, in their metal drawers by their lug nuts & brass fittings, for $1.00.

I like KED85 way of solving that problem, sounded so much grr, even though lazy guy like me will just change the o-ring because it worked the one time I had a leak.

The O-ring you need is, yes tomp is right with the 1 inch inside diameter (always go w/ him), the width is 1/8 inch and the Outside diameter is 1 1/4 inches. hope that helps. Oh and the number on the Pep Boys bag is 64214 if that helps any.

Send me your address and I'll mail one or two O-rings that I have left over.
Just got my Blazer 2.8 engine running.
I did the Chevy small block gasket trick. No leaks, especially after trial fitting the distributor several times (in & out-trouble getting it just right!)
Due to more room back there, I used the nut.

On the Firebird, I couldn't make it work, worth a damn.
That's why I made my own hold down stud set up.
Give it a shot.
You do need a jewelers file to dress the threads after ya chop off the head for converting to the stud.
