V6 to CFI?
ok guy
i have the chance to get rid of my 140,000 mile 88 V6 and buy a very nice condition 83 Z28. it only has 80,000 miles on it, crossfire injection 305, t-tops, and an automatic. they are asking 3500, buit i know i could talk them down.
is it worth it?

personaly, i think 3500 is a little too much, unless its in really good condition, as far as the milage though, i think the odometer only goes up to 99,999. so i would go with a carfax report to make sure its not 180,000, but i may be wrong. but alot of people like to sell there f-body's more then they are worth, check out KBB.com but i think the car is only worth about 2500, if ur gonna pay more then that, then bring it to a mechanic and ask them to check it out REALLY well.

YOU DO NOT WANT A CFI!!!
PARTS ARE REAL HARD TO COME BY!!
REAL HARD TO COME BY!
IF YA WANNA KNOW ABOUT CFI SET UPS, Read the latest issue of Corvette Fever.
They have an article about them (the CFI engines).
IT COSTS SO MUCH MORE MONEY TO MODIFY THAT ENGINE!
Run far far away fro that car.
You will never recoupe your investment or any other investment you make on it.
Never.
If you do not know about Corvettes or the problems and LACK of AVAILABILITY OF PARTS (from GM) OR THE COST TO UPGRADE FOR PERFORMANCE, RUN AWAY & SAY NICE CAR ANYWAY!
Strong warning from a Corvette knowledgable person. And I do know about these CFI engines. You do not want that example to play with. UNLESS YOU KNOW 100% EXACTLY WHAT TO DO.
I do not believe you do & NO offense on that last call!

Well the odometer will not wrap around until a million miles so unless they changed the actual spedo unit its 80k.
Performance wise these are decent and can perform quite well and there are many after market mods to push the limits of a 305. Ive driven a cross fire vett "350" and it ran quite well even for something rated at 195hp It had no problem spinning the tires through 3 gears and on general cruising, the fuel efficenicy guage read well over 20mpg.
Enought about the CF vett.
This Z@* that your looking into is probably worth what thier asking "IF in very good almost mint condition" but I would reccomend trying to at least get 3k for your car and see if they will take 3 for that one.
BTW there a post in the tech/gen from a month ago about CFI I would reccomend searching for it.

It is not that bad.. Their is even a Corvette Club just for that type... It can be modded. It is worth it for the fact it is a 305 and a 350 swap is easy... You can also toss a TPI or Superram on it and get some real power... Offer 2200, Cash in HAND

Ked has a very good point about the CFI and difficulty in modifying them. One of the biggest problems is the PROM; there is just not enough informatin available on it.
However, someon on the DIY PROM Board is working on a "conversion" of the ECM to the 747 TBI ECM. Once this is done, then they will be able to burn proms using the 747s Memcals which will make modifying the CFI much easier.

Heres the post.
I think were all going to be kicking ourselfs in the future when cross-fire injection is a hot collector item along with the fNord pinto

Try this post https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/001594.html for an interesting conversion.
The 747 conversion resolves the single biggest issue with CFI...the computer. Converting to a 747 makes the CFI as tuneable as any TBI.
This would allow a CFI owner to appear stock, but be able to modify his engine like any other SBC and tune the appropriate eprom to match. The ECM is key to tuning an EFI engine.

I would buy it for collectors sake.. You can alsways toss a cam, cat back exhaust, high flow converter, some 3.73 rear gears, higher stall and shift kit, and port the heads and ahve the stock look with a little more fun....

I tend to agree with Brian; yes, the CFI injection system is far from beautiful. But if the car's in great shape, then it sounds like a good "base" to start with. Hell, I'd rather do mechanical work over body work any day! You could probably convert the thing into an '83 V8 carb'd engine if you're short on cash and emissions laws in your area are tight... and move to the more expensive TPI system later.

The 305 is a major upgrade from V6 anyhow, and from what I've heard, the CFI wasn't all that bad, I would say don't pay more than 2500 for it and do go to http://www.Carfax.com to get real mileage, the odometer should be only 5 digits unless it's aftermarket... you should be careful in that event too... F-bodies did not have more than 5 digits until the later 80's (I only have 5 digits on my 84 firebird)

Special Features:
Non-functioning parking break
Non-functioning rear hatch pistons
Broken heater ****
Disconnected engine computer that continually says check engine
Future plans:
New Paint - take out two small rust holes
Reupholster the ceiling (bare foam now)
Highflow Cat-back exhaust
Single 12" Subwoofer... don't need to break windows

But while I was looking at camaros I did run accross a crossfire with an electric dash like the corvetts and Im sure thats tamper proof.
SSC?
Why create the confusion gm? why?
You know I don't mind the v-6 all that bad, but if the years are higher like you said you'de probabley better look around. Do some research before you make a decission to not buy it, check with mechanics, check around the parts stores, find out how hard they are to find parts, and also look around for performance parts, man if the car is in good shape, and if I found that I could still soup it up and do stuff with it, go for it, just go for your gutt feeling. I haven't heared a ton of things bad with CFI, but then again I have MPI, as a comment to the statement above, man I actually like my 6 better as I get a heck of a lot better economy and pull awesome emmisions, and I can still mod it too so V-6's aren't as bad as you might think, sure its not as fast but still not too bad. Its up to you, keep me posted on what you do.
As comparison for parts costs for Orpahn engines, try checking part prices on the King of the Hill Corvette engine (the Lotus twin cam job). Incidentially, they no offer waterpumps for those Corvette engines. And the Throttle bodies of the CFI's? Certain electronic parts no longer in GM inventory.
I own a 1974 Corvette & I get Corvette Fever.
Please educte yourself on the available hop up ideas of the CFI Corvette (1982 & 1984 cars).
The cost to hop those CFI engines up, is quite high, compared to the 1985 MPFI V-8's.
The article in the latest CF mag is quite good. BUT they do not list cost.
Get the car for collectibility, that's all.

How very odd... I thought that the 6 digit odometers didn't come along until later... the only 1985 or earlier cars I've seen with 6 digits were Hondas and Toyotas... all others are 5... oh well
