Best way to fix the leak

Hey guys I got my car running again, all it needed was a new catalytic converter
But now I need to have an emission inspection before I can renew the registration for it but they won't let me get one because they said there is a small leak at my exhaust manifold. Any one have the best way to replace it without removing a bunch of stuff or is there a way I could just plug it?

Re: Best way to fix the leak

We need more info than that, I am assuming that either the exhaust gasket is bad, or the manifold isn't torqued on all the way, or that it's leaking where it meets the intake side of the y-pipe. If its the gasket its fairly self explanatory, and can be done with basic hand tools if its leaking at the Y-pipe to collector connection then probably need new clamps there. or whatever the part is called that pulls them together. But I highly doubt the manifold has a hole in it, as it is very thick cast iron.

Re: Best way to fix the leak

Ok on the passenger side all the way at the back there I's a hole in where the header meets the cylinder head or what ever it is, I started the car and felt there but didn't feel any exhaust comin out.
Are you talking about the clamp where the y pipe cones up and connects to the header? Looks like a super tight space for a wrench
Sorry I'm not much help the guy just said there was a leak and he wouldn't do the inspection then he ran off

I would have to see it...that description doesn't quite do it for me. Take a picture and post it up if you can. And just because you can't feel exhaust coming out doesn't necessarily mean it isn't or won't.

Re: Best way to fix the leak

If it's leaking right at the manifold, a manifold bolt probably snapped off which is pretty common on these engines. When I got my engine back in the car I had a BAD leak at the Y pipe flange and got some exhaust cement and put it around the exhaust donuts and it worked just fine but I replaced the metal donuts with new ones. Also there is no way you will be able to get a wrench directly to the flange bolts. Your going to need a lot of extensions and a swivel joint and LOTS of PB blaster and loosen them from under the car.

That hole is meant to be there or at least mine has those holes too. Replace the manifold bolt and your good to go as long as the old bolt didn't break in the hole then your gonna be having some fun.

I got the gasket for the egr there and a bolt for the manifold
But as my luck goes the bolt is broken off in there... Any word from the wise?

Re: Best way to fix the leak

ur gonna have to get the bolt out of there... its going to suck. have some one do it for you if ur not comfortable with it. you only get one chance, maybe two if u drill it and "easy out it"

Dont really know what that second pic is but it looks extremely similar to a vacuum advance on a dizzy. I looked in my manual and cant figure it out. I dont have a TPI so Im not sure but Imma guess some kind of VAC connection. Anyone with more info jump in.

Thats the egr valve. Your gonna have to remove that whole manifold. Before you do, measure the depth of the broken bolt w/ a small screw driver to see if its flush, sticking out, or below the level surface. If its sticking out, then you might be able to twist it out w/ vicegrips. If not then you'll have to do some drilling, some guys have welded a nut to the broken bolt.
My experience w/ these is that they always twist out hard.
