Well at lest I found all of my leaks!

I found that both my valve covers and my distributor "O" ring are leaking. Unfortunetly I will have to take my intake off in order to get to the valve covers. My problem is that I think I cross threaded one of my bolts when I was attaching the EGR to the intake a while back. What can I do to get the bolt out?

Also what gaskets would be the best to get for my 3.1L? I will need valve cover, intake, and the "O" ring for the distributor.

The o-ring specs are here,

I also believe there are other valve cover issues there.

when I bought my 91 rs 3.1 I found that 2 of the EGR mounting bolts we're broken off inside the manifold. I had a friend carefully drill them out and retap the holes, So b careful removing them screws, also replace them gaskets (2 ea) and put some high temp antisieze on the screws so it wont seize up on you good luck

yeah i all ready had to replace the EGR. not only expensive, but it was a pain in the butt to put the meatl hose back on the intake.

I found out that the Valve covers may not be leaking and that it just could be from the distrubtor. At this point though I want to wait until I find a job to replace every thing. I think I have a intake leak on top of it. Also I want to get my spare set of fuel injectors clean and matched. I'd rather do this all at once and only replace gaskets the one time.

Thanks for help guys

On the valve covers you dont have to tear down the motor to get them off.I had to adjust my rockers, but I didnt want to take off my plenum and was able to get every bolt off using a swivle for the back bolts and extensions for the front of the valve covers with tons and tons of cussing I got them both in about 20 mins. You also have to take that egr tube off again to get the pass valve cover off.If you do it this way be happy you dont have the valve covers chromed and the egr tube hose polished. now thats fun.

and when you put them back on, i highly doubt you were able to torque them to correct specs

I was able to torque the ones on the sides and the fronts. The backs I tightned them down until they seemed tight enough.Plus a thick bead of silicon all around the gasket surface helps to prevent leaks.

BtchnRS, you might also want to rebuild the distributor while it's out. It's a 15 minute job once the distributor's out of the car, and will cost under $100. The module (stock or Holley performance) is $60, pick-up coil (can't be improved upon, so buy stock) is $12, and a cap/rotor kit is $20.

Yeah I plan on rebuilding it to. I all ready have the Holly ignition module. I replaced it in an attempt to resolve a rough and high idle problem, but it didn't help. when you pull the cap off you can see the rust every ware in there. I replaced every part of the ignition system execpt for a for full rebuild on the distributor. So I might as well give it a full rebuild.

Allthough I think I found the source of the idle problem. Right underneth the battery there is a plastic ball with a vacum hose attached to it. Well at some piont in life it's mounts got broken off and it is just hanging there. The hose is brittle. I think it might be part of the vaccum system. I'm not sure, becuase I don't even know what it is.
