Better off staying with the 2.8 system... It's more reliable, for starters, and second, you would need to get a Dakota Digital adapter for your cable and run a signal to the ECM. You can't connect the IP VSS to the ECM because the 3.1 ECM takes its speed signal straight from the VSS in the transmission and sends it to the instruments, not the other way around.

You simply connect everything up on the 3.1 as it was on the 2.8, with the exception of leaving the knock sensor by the starter disconnected and replace the oil pressure sender by the starter (if necessary) to connect to the existing harness. It runs fine, I promise... My 3.1 ran on a 2.8 system for 6 years.

You can get the optical VSS to work with the 3.1 ECM (1227730, which I prefer over any MAF system), but requires programming the chip to do so. Most GM codes/bins have the ability to "flip a bit" and use a different type of VSS.
I've done this with both codes $59 and $8D, I haven't played with $88 enough to know where that setting is.

... If he can get his hands on a programmer and chips... And where would the optical output connect to the 730 anyways? A reversal on the Speedo OUT line?

Re: 2.8 VSS conect to 3.1 ECM
The question is, how easily can you get your hands on an IC progammer, chips, and parts to replace the chip in the 3.1 MEMCAL? And do you know how to use it? If the answer is not very cheaply or easily or you don't know how to use it, stay with the 2.8 stuff... It's already there and works fine with the 3.1.
