3.1 help

so i have a 1991 3.1 camaro, i have been having a strange issue. Whenever i go into a turn or slowly come to a stop my car seems to want to die the idle drops out, rpms go down and up.

so i thought it was the power steering fluid because it was low and very dirty. I tried driving with ac off and ac on. still have the issue.

could my pressure switch be bad? any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

car runs and starts up just fine only when i go into turns or come to a stop is when im having the issue.

Re: 3.1 help

Odd combination. Shouldn't be power steering or a/c. Try putting the trans in neutral when you slow to a stop and also when taking a corner. See if you still have an issue. If not then something with the trans. If you do then more diagnostics needed.

I think there could be a possibility of something having to do with the power steering sensor, though I would assume that would throw a code.

Only reason I say this is because with my Megasquirt swap, the IAC is now unused as is the power steering sensor, and when I turn the wheel in gear the rpms drop, most likely because the IAC is not being used to compensate for the load increase.

But that in concert with coming to a stop is indeed an odd combination. I would think it would be something to do with the IAC, because steering increases load and braking drops vacuum, if that is correct then I would say IAC may be the culprit.

Re: 3.1 help

I was thinking IAC for the slowing to a stop but didn't think it would account for the turning issue. No harm in checking everything is clean and working right.

Re: 3.1 help

If you are slowing down into a corner and it wants to die, try unplugging the torque converter lockup. I might be getting stuck on and lugging down your engine

Well one thing is free to try, unplug the torque converter connector at the transmission, and see if the issue persists. That should be a pretty quick thing to test.

Another thing that is free to check, would be to pull the IAC valve out of the intake/throttle body to check for a dirty valve or blockage of the port by carbon or just some gunk buildup.

Those would be the first 2 things I would check, being its free to check. Is your check engine light lit, or does it light up when the issue occurs?

Re: 3.1 help

First even easier trans check is just put it in neutral first before turning/stopping.

Re: 3.1 help

Another simple check to see if the tcc is engaging/disengaging is to get on a flat road and maintain say 50mph. Without moving the gas pedal gently push on the brake pedal while watching the rpm. You should see a small increase in rpm. Then release the brake pedal and the rpm should return to what it was. This shows the tcc is engaged while cruising, releasing when the brake is applied (shouldn't need much brake pedal movement) and re-engaging when the brake is released. If it doesn't happen as described it needs investigating.
