air box removal

if you take the stock air box from an 86 2.8 and take off the plastic top so its just the metal holder and expose the air filter- does this do any good?- my freind ripped his off and he claims it makes a difference -before i take things apart you think its a good idea? ---

next question -- from the throttle body forward the tube goes into this flat plastic thing-wich goes to the MAFS. what the hell is this?- can i just pass this thing and stretch the tube straight to the MAFS ?-

-- question # 3-- did anyone ever make a higher volume fuel rail for our engines?- and if so is it worth it?

1. Yeah it does help ! ...expect anything from 5-10 hp .

2. It reads how much air is going into the engine .Don't mess with it ! They are delicate , and new ones are EXPENSIVE ...Yeah I know I have my maf screen removed , Im lucky I did not screw it up to !

3.They don't make a better flowing fuel rail .

I removed my airbox and put a K&N cone filter there. It sounds great. When I go to start it up in storage the thing just hisses, it sounds great! It would even sound better if I didn't have that nastey ticking noise from my cam, but o-well. I cant wait to get a digital camera to show you my rig, I might get one this weekend and drive up north to where my car is and take some pics.

Wayne, I think he's asking about the rectangular "air duct" between the TB hose and the MAF sensor, which is there on 85-89 Firebird 2.8's.

Hell YEAH bypass that thing! You might have a hard time stretching the stock hose to meet the MAF & air box combo, though. I found a Camaro throttle body hose in a junkyard. The Camaro's hose is round at the end, instead of a large oval like the Firebird's.

I then bought a 3" mandrel-bent "J"-bend exhaust pipe from Summit Racing. The "J" bend is a tighter 180 degree bend than a "U" bend. I cut the "J" in half so I had a tight 90 degree bend. That's how I replaced the rectangular air duct.

Some guys have used PVC pipe in place of it. The thing is, once you replace the duct, you need to connect the new pipe to the MAF- do that with a Home Depot 3"-to-3" flexible sewer pipe connector. Fpr even better flow, ditch the stock air box, and do what Jaren said- put a conical filter on the end of the MAF. Visit http://www.knfilters.com to decide which conical you want. There's no specific part # for this application.

yeah I just finished my set up on my 89 Firebird, I even used the maf sensor. Its pretty much all rubber components with a little pvc under the rubber running into a cone air filter. The thing hisses like a vacume cleaner and sounds awesome. I didnt take out the screen yet. I think I may go yank from a local junk yard, it will be super cheap there. Did anybody use a KN filter with a similar set up. I could barely get my little spectra cone filter to fit. I just took some pics with my buddies digital camera and will have them up soon.

You can take that air box out (the small black box mounted on the radiator) and run a straight pipe from the intake hose to the MAF. i used 3" to 3" sewer adapters and had a muffler shop bend me some 3" exhaust piping to go from the hose to the MAF, and then had a metal working shop bend me some new brackets. Worked great!

I did use the rubber adapters also. You can actually put that little sensor in a drilled hole in the adapter.

ok today i ripped that crap out and put in the sewer pvc pipe at the end of the hose from the throttle boddy and connected some flex exaust pipe to the MAF sensor- it works alright-i noticed a slight diff in acceleration- i dont have the cone filter yet- i dont think i need it- will the cone help any more or no?

Dude- air does not bend well. you should have the intake jut straight out, and make an air dam so fresh air gets shot up toward the open element. but i guess your problem is relocation of the MAF, but it cant be that hard. And itd be more powerful than the bent setup.
