Where did my bass go????

L:ast monday my sub(10" kenwood "tornado") just quit working. I was listening to my cd player and all of a sudden I was left with just vocals. After work I looked at it and sub was fine. So I ripped my seat out and my stereo to make sure everything was fine, and it was no pinched or shorted out wires. Everything was connected and tight. The fuses on the stereo and the amp were NOT blown either so I was befuddled as to what could have caused this. My only thought was my preouts on the headunit, because the sub would come and go. When it did work it was only for a few seconds and it would be gone for minutes or until I started the car again. So saturday I went and got a new CD headunit and it worked all night Saturday no problems:lala: Then sunday morning I go out and Go to the store and before I get on the road the sub got quiet again. So after I got home I took the sub out for the 3RD time and this time I took and replaced all the terminals and made sure nothing was corroded( kinda humid in the south). Put it back in my car and it worked.... then it quit. So I resorted to primitive ways of fixing things and slapped the box and the sub came back to life for a few seconds and then died. Slapped it again, nothing and again it came back on and then died again. I did this for a few minutes then quit cuz my hands started to hurt. I am lost as to what could be causing this. For 2 years it has been fine. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any and all suggestions welcome.

:hail:

Thanks Drew

are you sure the contacts from the terminal on the box to the speaker inside are solid and dont move freely? did you inspect the wire from the terminal on the sub to the cone area? on one of my type rs i had a wire that kept burning. sometimes it would burn completely off and sometimes it would burn but not completely and every other time the sub hit it would go out since the moving of the burnt wire created poor contact points. just might be something to check out. does your amp have safety precautions i.e. turns off when it get hot or when there is too much current? that might be another possible assumption.

try this, take the sub out of the box but leave the speaker wires connected. turn on the stereo and then starting wiggling wires. when it cuts in and out then you have focused your problem...if that is the problem.

Blow speakers sometimes have bad connections inside. I had a blown sub that would work half the time. When I pulled it out and replaced it I tore apart the cone, and the coil inside the magnet was fried. Wonder it even worked at all.

Question for you tho I have 2 12" in a box, they are underpowered I think. I know it's subjective, but did yours hit pretty hard when you put the power to it. Mine hit ok, but I they ar not earth shaking. How were yourss did they really pound?

Anyone else have any input on them tha actually had hands on? with the tornados?

I agree from the sound of it there are two possibilities:

1) The connection from the wall of the box into your actual subwoofer is bad which causes it to only work sparatically...
2) You have a blown woofer. When subs blow out, they don't necessarily completely quit. Then can come back to life for a few seconds...

What you should try is hooking up some other kind of speaker to it (a friend let you borrow one?) and see if it works. If thats the case, there ya go! Other option is what spartyon said. Take it out of the box but leave it connected and wiggle the wires. There ya go...

spartyon my amp oes ave safety precautions on it but the problem is the stereo will only be on a few seconds before Ilose bass so I dont think it is getting hot enough to cut out for safety protection. It might I do not know. The sub looks fine. The cone is intact everywhere, noo tears or seperating( it is also a dual voice coil sub) the magnet looks like brand new except the sticker is peeling off and one scratch on it from a screw driver but other than that it looks like it did the day oi got it. The sub does not crackle either when it comes and goes it is clear. lykan my 1 10 is turned down facing inside the well. It hits hard enough to make the hair on my head move. It makes a tickling sensation with your hair against the T-Tops.(my head or hair do not touch those). That and i have to constantly go back and tighten screws in the "cockpit" every now and then.

Like I said before, your sub can be blown and you would never know it. They could look new as the day you got em. Thats the reason I was saying you should borrow a friends sub or grab some other speaker and test it. Couldn't hurt! If I'm wrong, at least thats a variable you know isn't in the equasion...

You mentioned having a dual voice coil sub. Try connecting just one side at a time of the dual voice coils. You may have blown only one voice coil and have a temporary fix until you can afford a new one. Of course I don't know how you had them wired originally......

OTH, I lost the right side ampliifer inside my home stereo receiver and blew the base speaker on that side. (Didn't hurt the other speakers inside the box). Hooked another (really cheap) speaker up to that terminal and blew the base speaker in that one as well. Had to go buy a new Receiver and base speaker for my home stereo.... You might have blown a channel in your amp. Mine didn't blow the fuse until I blew the second speaker.... Hook up a "throw away" (old factory) speaker first unless you want to potentially buy your friend a new sub as well......

90RS305 is right, I had a blown Pioneer sub that worked fine at low volumes and with a few frequencies.. but once it got even moderately loud or hit a harder hitting frequency it popped and cut out.

I also had an old kenwood sub that had shorted out, it worked only with the lowest possible volume. As soon as I turned the volume up at all it just cut out.

Try smelling the voice coil area it might smell kinda like a burnt electrical smell. However, it may not if there is minimal damage to the voice coil(s).

In regards to the wireing of the DVC sub, try just the one coil like previously mentioned, then try the other. If you happen to have the coils in parallel and then connected to an amp with bridged outputs, you might be looking at around 1 ohm of a load on the amp, the amp may not be rated to handel this, and is showing signs of wear because of excess current going through it.

Again, the single VC connection (which would usually be a 4 ohm load) should eliminate or prove that to be the case.

I hope this helps a little

ey guys thanks for the help. I took up to my friends house and we put one of his subs in and it worked. Then he hooked mine up and pressed down on the cone slightly and the sub began to hit. One of the wires came away from the coil so I went to 5 diferent places trying to find the same sub and you would think i was looking for parts for a 32 chevy. They all looked at me funny and said they couldnt get it. Good ol Ebay came through though and I have one coming to me as we speak. Thanks again.
