THE "If it aint metal, it aint music!" thread!

K, heres the deal...for some reason, I'm a south american born metal head...sweet! BUUUUT...what's the best set-up, brand, or even model number(s) for someone that's ONLY gonna listen to metal?!!?!?!

All I want to do, is listen to my metal....and as loud as I possibly fu*cking can. why? because if I wanted to hear loud obnoxious bass-like sounds....I'd go fly to Iraq and laugh at the a-rabs as they get bombed! Anywho, all crap aside....I find it really annoying when shiney little POS's which are comparable to ramen noodles are next to me at a light with crap seeping through they're ghetto-custom "set ups" :nono:.

I've always wanted to pull up to some guy playing some digital/techno/whatever music... him being way back in his seat with the whole crooked hat thing going, etc etc.... and crank up something crazy.
Burzum, Children of Bodom, Vehemence, Amon Amarth, old school Cradle of Filth, Behemoth, Marduk, Mithotyn, ... something along those lines. Metal.. black or death... preferably Scandinavian.

Burzum has some killer emotional screams. Check out 'Ea, Lord of the Depths' and 'En Ring Til Aa Herske' ... 'tis wonderful **** to chill to and let it overwhelm you.

EDIT: I'd actually been wondering the same thing you asked... what to get to play metal the best.

This has also been my problem.
every shop I went to wanted to sell me two 12w7's and monterous amps, then I told them I was into SQ and listened to Metal---- you could almost hear a pin drop whiole they were thinking of a set-up that would work.

I don't drive my third gen too much and the stereo in there was stolen about a year ago .
My daily driver is a truck but I settled on the following stuff:
Alpine CDA-9831 head unit
JL Audio XR 6.5 components
JL audio VR 6.5" coax
JL Audio 8" w3v2- (.65 ft^3 ported to 35Hz)
JL Audio 300/4

The front channels of the amp are powering the XR's
the Rear channels are bridged powering the 8w3v2.

This setup is clear and LOUD inside the truck, kinda loud outside but not obnoxious. If a boomin boy comes up next to me-- I see him, but I can't hear him

I listen to mainly old school metal from the 80's-90's with some newer stuff. The only problem is that some of the newer stuff will sound worse on better equipment. During the recording process they are clipping the signals to introduce another level of distortion--check out the last metallica album) on a mediocre system you get the desired effect of distortion, but on a properly tuned system it sounds like sh|t, by boosting and clipping the signals alot of the newer stuff sounds flat-almost one dimensional.

But i do listen to some hiphop/rap. Some ladies really like that stuff and believe it or not the 8w3v2 holds its own on the bass side. I have literally boomed my rear view mirror off the windshield twice I have a set of rosary beads (don't ask) rapped around the rear view mirror hanging down about 8 inches and during a song with good bass, Jesus gets to jumping about inch or so.

I would think to go no larger than an 8" sub because you'd want your system to hit as tightly as possible for some good metal listenig.

I was originally gonna go w/ something like that but then I started feeling let down by Rock 'cause anything new just sucks.

I listen to Skinny Puppy, wumpscut, KMFDM stuff like that and I use 1 JL 10 and I find it to be the best balance between fast drum beats and low bass for that type of music. For inside speakers I couldnt say, I have pioneer 6x9's in the back and the stock 4x6's in the front and midbass is lacking big time so dont use those.

I'm a fellow metal-head. Check out the latest Fear Factory & Killswitch Engage. As far as a metal-head's system goes, I can give you my suggestions. I happen to be the product manager for a chain of Car Audio shops. First thing is first. You can't have a great sounding system if you are using a crappy source-unit. Like the old saying goes - Sh*t rolls down hill. I suggest Alpine or Pioneer. You need a unit with 3 sets of high-volt (minimum 4-volt) RCA pre-outs (front, rear & subwoofer). I really like the Pioneer Premier DEH-P960MP. You can use the following link to check it out.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...496605,00.html

After you pick a source-unit, you need power (and lots of it). Metal contains a lot of dynamics. In order for your system to keep up with the music you have to have POWER. I suggest the Memphis MC1300D - Memphis Belle.

http://www.memphiscaraudio.com/Downl...es/MCA2004.pdf

Even though we don't listen to rap or 'bass' music, we still need the ability to reproduce bass efficiently. Metal conatins and extreme amount of sub-bass information. If you listen to the newest Fear Factory, you'll recognize this fact. I have two 12's personally. They are tight and are NOT boomy. Q-Logic makes a custom Subwoofer Enclosure for third gens. It looks great. For subs I would recommend either Memphis M3124D or Rockford Fosagte P312D4.

For the rest of the speakers, you need something that will deliver loud & tight midbass. MB Quart speakers make a 3-way component system that does this nicely. It consists of a tweeter & 4" mid-range that will fit in the stock dash locations, and a 6 1/2" mid-bass that will work perfectly in the stock 6"x9" locations. The part numbers are QSD210 & QSD164.

This system would deliver sound that ANY metal-head would love - deep double-bass impacts, tight bass guitar & screaming guitar solos.

The system I just described is a simplified version of what I own myself. I am perfectly content with it and I am in the position of putting just about anything that I want in my car.

I hope this helps.

Rockford Fosgate is an excellent brand if you're keen on Michael Bolton or Dolly Parton. Not quite metal, but the sound is just as robust, no?

Just thought I'd throw this fact in.

Oh, and does anyone else listen to In Flames, Shadows Fall, Venom(old stuff), Mayhem or Entombed(IMO, they sold out 2 CDs after Wolverine Blues )?

Re: Darkhorse....

yeah...after seeing your post, I'm releived(sp?) that I'm not the only person who began to fell that all the new rock .......SUCKS!
IMO, Metallica is crap.....and has been since 1985. Slipknot....is just wanna be metal with a wanna be black/death metal attitude.

For me, good metal is stuff I can put on, relax to, and fall asleep listening too....and not because it sucks, because it's GOOD!!!

A good stereo can play anything. Put the myths to rest.

who cares what music someone listens to? you guys are all loud and obnoxious if you want everyone else besides you to hear what's playing in your car.

That is all I hear around here. All these ryce kids driving around with the windows down blaring sh*t. Yesterday pulled up to the light and this kid was listening to Ludacris at a desent level but when I pulled up in the Z he turned it up at a part where it said "F**k YOu" over and over. If my amp hadn't of fried the other day I would have gave him a taste of a old school Metallica like ...And Justice for All or even gave him a taste of his own medecine at thump Luda twice as loud in his face. The kid didn't even have subs. And if he did they sucked. So instead when the light turned green I gave him a taste of my broken exauhst. I couldn't hear him anymore. But you'll have that at full throttel when he trys to take you in his Toyota Corolla. And I have yet to hear a metal head blaring his system except my best friend. So that is all we want to do.

Ok for my set up. I have an Alpine CDA-7875 head unit. Alpine 6x9 that were in the car when I bought it. Pioneer speakers from Wal-Mart in the dash. And 2 Memphis 12 in Power Bass subs with a 400 watt Memphis amp. The subs are in a custom box built for the well that I got at the local stereo shop.

I listen to a lot of Metallica, Mudvayne (hometown boys), Megadeth, Pantera, Slayer, Slipknot and the like. The new Metallica sounds like crap if I play it to loud.

That set up works very very good in MHO.

If you want to hear loud metal, go to a show.

If you want to hear it in your car, all you need is a good system with a few hundred watts behind it.

If some punk kid wants to crank obnoxious tracks with cheesy bass, let him.....don't sink to thier level. Have some class, ignore them and don't even look...

Infact one of those lowered fart can civics with 4 donuts almost hit me head on the other day, driving on the wrong side! The kid had two of his buddies and two or three girls in there too. I wanted to hit them so bad (in my lane approaching a stop sign)...but the car I was driving had no insurance....doh... so I swerved clear off of the road (right side) to let him go whizzzzing by, that upside down visor wearing retard even looked at me like I was in the wrong! Son, I've got a message for you: I'll be looking for you this winter when I am behind the wheel of a 4x4 full size p/u with a steel snow-plow...it's on....you better stay on your side of the road!!! :nono:

Anyways.....

whoever spoke bad things about slipknot is drastically out of touch with real music. Those guys are great, let's pick on some played out bands that really do suck. I'll start:

Nickleback

Hoobastank

I know there's more......

Audio Slave....alomst as bad as some of the crap you sould hear on a soft rock station.

anyone?

Oh my, I'm so embarassed....you mean the one in my profile?

It's got potential, 85 horses...it's a lighter car so I think a turbo and NOS might get me into the 18s.....then I'll be well on my way to keeping up with some of these thirdgens.

hmm....

like has been said before....you drive an AE-86(not a j-spec, so not 100% r1ce....but close enough with your attitude)

Also, like I said before....Slipknot DOES suck....and for someone who drives an AE-86 who'se all about nos & high psi to make it go faster, to say that they're great.... proves two of my many points:1.) people WILL buy sh1tty music and think it's great.
2.) you ARE, truely....a r1cer wanna-be.

Oh, and as for those other bands you mentioned....you think they're "metal"!?!?! LMFAOOTF! ....but you ARE right about one thing, and one thing only....the bands you listed DO suck!

I was just busting your chops in good fun, you made a cheap shot about listening to music loud , I like any car as long as its fast (or really cool-looking), Im actually about to buy an 85 GT this week. I also had an Rx7 that could tear s**t up ( like most LB9s, L69s, and some L98s on this board, it did high 12s low 13s).

Sounds like we have some true metal-heads on here. It also sounds like we have a couple of posers, as well. For the REAL guys (or girls) here's a few bands that you might want to check out:

Chimaira (AWESOME!!!!!)
DevilDriver (former Coal Chamber vocalist)
Hatebreed
Soul Embraced
Lamb Of ***

My all time favorite "Classics":
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power

That's pretty funny 2.73s, I wasn't sure what you were getting at there but no offense taken in the first place.

I give you credit for even noticing that.....most people are looking for something along the lines of a thirdgen and then there's me..... 16v...sohc...?

You have a sense of humor too, unlike 305 tiger who pointed out that I ONLY have an AE-86 ...it's not even a J-spec!! Appearantly he knows more about it than I do.

Just for the record, the car is 100% stock without a single mod of any kind...infact it's pretty much a beater. NOS and high psi.....please, the car has 190,000 miles on it as it is, is there any need for that?

Please don't assume you know my life story 305. I've been posting here since '98, don't you think there is a reason for that?

I like what I like and there really is no reason for me to care.

Hoobastink and others certainly aren't metal, so why do they keep playing them on the radio?? I think you guys should take over a radio station...preferably WAAF in Boston, they're going down hill like all the others.

I still think any metal has very much bass in it and if you don't think so, you need a better stereo. A good enough system won't break a sweat no matter what you throw at it.

I take back all I said....

As long as your stereo sounds good, crank it up!!

And if you don't like Slipknot, that's fine, it's a free country.

Fadetoblack did cover just about all you need to know about recreating loud metal. I second the 12"s too, no need to compromise on the bass and use an 8". I prefer sealed enclosures for SQ purposes.

AAF is at it again with 'Free NP' I'm really lost on this one, but I'm certain it's purpose is the same as WOW.

...

jyd- ...now you're getting somewhere....WAAF DOES suck now....it's a shame. In fact, I dont even think they play metal on WCCC(106.9) down in CT anymore. It's a sad world, when everyone grows up to like sell-out bands.

The reason I initially made the post, is b/c I've found out that in many cars with stock and non-stock sound systems....that metal just plain sucks in them. It's either ALL bass or ALL treble, with nothing I found in the middle!

It's sad, but when i'm in a friends' car and they put metal on and you cant hear the words, I just tell them to either turn it off or kick me out of the car and put some rap on....cus then the system will at least get used for all you can hear from it!

oh, and I forgot to tell ya Jyd, that an AE-86 is the JDM(Jap. Domestic Model) name for a Toyota Corolla.

I am into metal as well "Megadeth, Manowar, Old Metalica (anything before Black album...before they went radio), Skinny Puppy, KMFDM".

My setup is a bit overpowered for this kind of music however I wanted to spend a good chunk of change on this setup so I hooked myself up with the following

2 Kenwood KAC 929 1000 watt amps
2 Pioneer Premier 1200watt 10" subs
2 Mobile Authority 1 Farrad capacitors
0 guage wireing from redtop bat back
4 guage from pheonix gold distributor to each amp
0 guage ground wire
120amp pheonix gold fuse
Pioneer Premier DEH-660P Head Unit
4 Pioneer Premier 150watt peak 70watt RMS 4X6 speakers all around

All and all the system sounds clean. I think the head unit is playing a major role in this as it has a sound processor built in which allowed me to tweak every inch of the sound spectrum which makes those guitar solos sound just that much nicer.

"The reason I initially made the post, is b/c I've found out that in many cars with stock and non-stock sound systems....that metal just plain sucks in them. It's either ALL bass or ALL treble, with nothing I found in the middle!"

That's a major problem with aftermarket 'systems'. I install systems for people and I even used to do it for a shop. In the end, no matter how much you know, the customer/sales person makes the decision....and it isn't always the best decision.

The HU I had in my T/A had Alpine's BBE feature. All this did was pick it up a little on the ends of the audible frequency spectrum. It worked out great, but wasn't always necessary. The only other adjustments were bass and treble. Even with limited options, it was consistent in sound and comparable to the newest Pioneers with 10,000 ways to adjust your music.

The HU is definitly the most important unit. it only needs one feature to play metal loud and clear: excellent fidelity

No real system is powered from the HU, sure some might sound good, but it won't hold up and/or deliver the sound quality you want after putting it through the abuse that this music will put it through. I can hear the subtle distortion a mile away.

Personally, I prefer more efficient speakers with flexible surrounds. For coaxials or components, this allows for good SQ and some mid bass response.

Infinity makes a nice speaker, but they make them too tight to respond to bass the way I want them too. I've actually went with less expensive speakers to get the sound that I wanted.

Whatever amp you use needs to cut the lows out of the signal and allow for no distortion on the lower end. The crossover setting depends on the speaker. location, power, maximum listening volume....ect.. set it any way you like, but the idea is to get the mids and highs without the interuption of the lows.

The subs will operate on the same principle, gain level set to match the output of the rest of the music, crossover set to get the best sound quality in the set gain level. With the sub, lower crossover settings and higher gain will get more punch, a higher crossover setting and lower gain will result in decent quality bass with no significant bumps. Sub tuning is always a challenge for me, because I have the most critical ears of all....I still know when it's done right though

I believe you really can't go wrong with sealed enclosures. A properly matched built box with one or two 12" in it with 500-1000 watts of real power will rock any which way you look at it. I had the JL/Audio 500/1 amp, no complaints on that one, I'd use one agian.

Ported boxes don't need as much power to sound good, but I still don't think they sound as good as a good sealed set-up. I think most people like ported boxes for the 'boom' effect, or they find it impressive that it hits like it does with a 150 watt amp. I'm not a box building type person, so I like to skip all of the engineering and port siz tuning and go straight to what I know works.

You said it 305, the hardest part about building a system is finding components that actually work together!

Fadetoblack did say the same thing I've discovered: for music to be loud and clear, especially metal (which actually is clear with the right stereo) you need one thing that can not be substituted, POWER and lots of it!! When you have enough power and an entire sytstem that can handle it, it will do anything you want it to.

I'm looking in my TRD catalog right now for some J-speck parts for my AE-86, nevermind stereo equipment...
