4th Gen steering column swap
I am interested in swaping out my old steering column and wheel with a 4th gen set up. Will the 4th gen column work? If not, will at least the 4th gen steering wheel work with my 3rd gen column? Any help you guys can give me, I'd appreciate. Thanks.

Re: 4th Gen steering column swap
The 4th gen column won't work due to it being longer than a 3rd gen unit and the 4th gen wheel won't fit a 3rd gen column due to the length of the top of the shaft where it bolts on, it's longer than a 3rd gen column.

Re: 4th Gen steering column swap
Hey, thanks a lot. I really appreciate your help. It will have saved me a lot of time and money. Any suggestions where to find new or reconditioned '90 to '92 leather steering wheels and airbags? I have looked all over and all I find is junk. I'm trying to restore my convertible, so I want the nicest parts possible.

That's great. Were there any modifications? Are you using the wheel with the stereo controls? That's the wheel I wanted to get so I don't have to lean over all the time to use the volume or change stations.

Re: 4th Gen steering column swap
you have to run the reluctor wheel on wheel itself, and also on the column, plus you have to fish a wire through the column.
i know what involved cause i saw the parts when i removed the steering wheel.
not sure if its possible, but im sure it is.
mine is just for looks.
the wheel without steering controls is gawd ugly!

Great man, thanks for your help. I have a friend who is selling the column and the wheel, so I thought I would give it a try. You mentioned the reluctor. Not to sound retarded, but what is it? And do I need to buy another one? You mentioned I needed two.

Re: 4th Gen steering column swap
there was a grey ring, and then something down in the steering column as well.
i wanna say that grey piece loooked like it would hold cupholders.
cicular, with 2-3 legs sticking out/up.
if you are getting the column, all the parts should be there.
if you can fish it all out, then you should be able to fish it back in.
hope it works out.

Re: 4th Gen steering column swap
I have a 1997 steering wheel in my 1990 (both camaro's) - it was a direct fit except for the pigtail to the airbag - I just cut off the old one and respliced so I had a mating connector. And the new steering wheel looks so much better!

Re: 4th Gen steering column swap
Thanks for the additional input. I bought the wheel and steering coulumn yesterday. It's a 2002 setup. I just have to see if I can somehow make the steering column fit. Has anyone done a 4th gen column in a 3rd gen dash? There's got to be a way to make it work. If not, at least I have a real nice steering wheel.

Re: 4th Gen steering column swap
It is just the steering column, not the whole setup with the rack and pinion and tie rods etc. This column was off a 2002 Z28 with rack and pinion steering. Will the rack and pinion work on a 3rd gen? If so, I can get that from him as well. If I can make the whole steering system from his car work with mine, I would love to do that. At least for right now, I want to get the steering column bolted in if it will work. Has anyone done this?

Re: 4th Gen steering column swap
I think its doable... If I remember correctly, the extra length only comes in AFTER the firewall. I believe the column will bolt in, and in fact, most of the electrical connectors are the same. The column "shells" are quite similar. I still have a 4th gen column in my garage, and two thirdgen columns right now. Im curious again so I might play around with it...
You might even be able to just use the old switches from your thirdgen column on the new one in case there is a switch/wiring descrepency.
Here is where you will have to do some messing around. The part of the column that sticks into the engine bay is longer. Its shaped similar to the end on the thirdgen column but rotated 90*. I think its called the DD end. Beacuse it looks like two D's back to back.
I dont believe you can get the thirdgen shaft to work, unless you modify it pretty heavily. I tried to make the 4th gen shaft work...and its close, but again, the ends arent consistant with what you'll need. If you are a good welder, you can make something with with the 4th gen shaft...which is what I might do this time around even WITH the 3rd gen column. No rag joint and no binding...
But its worth you taking a look at it. I think I had the 4th gen column bolted in...but I cant remember. Give it a try though.
