This is my friend's 1989 IROC and we both want to know why some Camaros have this lid in the trunk and others don't. Is it an option? If so,what is the option code?
they are hard to find and even harder to install. there was a special welded on brace but you cant do tht now - there is a gas tank in the way. the dealers dont have any left, i tried to find one that way. the braces are done at the factory - so no luck there either.
i had to prefab a brace up and then had it bolted in, but that was trickey because you cant just run the holes, or you put a few in the gas tank.
but they are nice. and they qualify as a trunk so you can carry guns in there, when you go to the range.
The complete option code is B48 - Luggage compartment trim. It included carpet inserts on the plastic rear interior panels and the locking cover panel over the trunk well. The physical RPO for the locking panel is D27. I want to say B48 was availble from '82-89 or 90. As "daferris" noted above, the locking panel was also used on Camaros with the Bose radio option.
My '82 T/A has the option. Its nice as it makes getting the T-Tops into the storage bag a lot easier.
myn has it but idk what part of the car it came with

I have one of those with black carpet if you're looking to buy one. I don't have the weld-in brackets or matching rear trim piece that has a ledge for it to sit on though.

B48 is luggage compartment trim. That's it. It is the carpeting trim on the wheel wells and rear panels. D27 is the rear locking cover and has nothing to do with B48.

B48 is luggage compartment trim and included D27 rear locking cover. They were not separate options. See attached pic of a dealer order form. Under option B48 it notes "Inc. Rear Compartment Storage Cover". There is no separate D27 option on the order form.
The '82 brochure has a picture showing B48/D27 with the caption "Available cargo trim includes carpeted sides and lockable storage compartment door"
I used to have one of those on my ride, the previous owner created a sub-box out of it and used it as a flip up sub box. It was surprisingly nice. I wish I had pics of it.
Starting in '86 GM started to put an electric power pull-down trunk latch so the hatch didn't have to be slammed closed. You just lightly push down on the hatch until you hear a click sound and then the motor activates and pulls the hatch fully closed This is the same system that Cadillac has used for decades. The pull-down latch is considerably larger than the simple standard latch used on '82-85 cars so the rear plastic trim panel has a larger bump in the center. The D27 trunk well cover had to be redesigned to fit the pull-down latch style rear trim panel.
So there are rear trim panels and D27 covers for '82-85 with the standard latch and '86-92 with the electric pull-down motor latch.
could you maybe take more pictures of it? like the ledge that it sits on?? i wanna make one really bad.. cheapest one i could find was 50 bucks on ebay

To get D27 you had to order B48.
I think the lockable storage they are talking about is the standard side storage on the left. B48 certainly didn't include D27 in 1986 as my car has the carpeted trim (B48) but not the locking cover in the pics above.
