Cam vs. smog sniffer

What cam duration and lifts are you guys getting through the emissions test with? I have an L-98 with World SR Torquers and a comp cam with .450/.480 and 206/210 at .050" lift. I am due for my first emissions test on my new engine rebuild in January and went kind of conservative on the cam for fear of failure on the test. I hate emissions requirements.

I'm running a ZZ3 cam and it passed CA emissions last year using a stock chip.

Specs with 1.6 roller rockers...
Duration: 208/221 @ .050" lift
Lift: .505"/.544"
LSA: 112

You should do fine with your cam as long as you have functional cats. I plan on installing an LPE 219 cam...

219/219 @ .050", .560/.560 lift w/1.6 rockers.

I've heard of people passing smog easily with this cam...same goes with the HOT cam.

Hopefully this will give you some idea how big a cam you can go and still pass smog.

Thanks a million. I see that you can go quite a bit more radical than I chose to go with mine. Maybe I can sqeak a little more out of mine with some 1.6 rockers though.

I don't think cam size has anything to do with emisions..528 lift and 292.0 duration. My emisions are HC 24, CO-% .36, NO-ppm is 229 and I have 1.6 rocker arms. I have 450-500 hp. I think as long as you have a good fuel managment system you will be fine.

P.S. I don't have any emisions equipment.

Ummmm ... you are utterly and completely wrong. Cam Size (duration, lift, LSA, etc) has an INCREDIBLE amount to do with emissions.

I chose the 76cc SR Torquers because of the extremely hot summers here in Phoenix and I know of several crack/warp problems some friends have had mixing metals. The heads were $759 from PAW and I had read several books (Lingenfelter etc.) that talked pretty highly of them. I put them on when I built the engine and had no problems whatsoever. I chose the Kieth Black KB120 pistons and a felpro composition gasket (.035 compressed thickness). When I had the machine work done on the engine I had the block decked to about .005 which puts the quench area thickness about .040 or so.

Oh yeah, so far I really like them alot. I'm still breaking the engine in so I can't get too radical yet. )

I chose the pistons to go with the heads. The KB 120's have two valve reliefs and make about a 9.1:1 with the 76cc heads. There is one thing about the heads though. The World Products spec. sheet (on the worldcastings.com website) shows a max lift of .500" on the left side of the page and an installed height of 1.75" and in the FAQ section on the right side they show max. to be .560" at installed height of 1.820". I emailed them and they said the .560" was correct. I probably would have gotten a higher lift cam had I known. I didn't measure the installed height when I put it all together. Maybe someone on this board knows the actual measurement. The cam I chose seems to work very well for a mild street build up. The stock TPI setup limits the top end anyway and I didn't feel like going to the SuperRam and all of the $$$$ it meant.

I think it's pretty much broken in by now (1500 miles on new rebuild) and I'm getting 15 MPG. That's about what I expected to get. I don't have to get it emissions tested until January. We'll see.
