Trans-Go vette servo woes (yes still)
Ok this weekend, i went from the 2 shims i was running to one shim because the band was dragging. Still drags with one shim. Ditched the shims altogether, went back to the stock spring, still drags the band. The trans go springs must be too stiff to run with the thick assed spring in there instead of shims.
The car shifted great the one time i didn't get the servo all the way in, and it had extra room to work. Of course i was puking fluid around the servo driving around....
Where do i go from here? No shims? go try to find stock springs? cut some springs or something? i'm so close

How are you determining that it is too tight? I like to check with the tranny out of Park and make sure that I can turn the driveshaft in both directions (one is harder than the other). I also personally don't like the solid Servo setup as I think it is too rough and especially when manually downshifting it is too easy to lock the tires and lose control so except for a strip only car, I don't use that.

leo, the car has only 2 and 4.....put it in one, and it bogs hard and if you drop to one from 2, it actually stops the trans completely. The rear locks. The trans doesn't know what to do. it will somewhat shift to 3..no lockup in 3 tho...it also seems to bog as though the band is dragging, and will not completely loosen.
it was shifting all 4 gears when i installed the servo, and i guess the snap ring wasn't seated in it's groove properly. It allowed the servo to come out of its bore a hair extra, and it shifted great.....except for the fact that i poured fluid all down the street. so i know if i somehow found a way to get the whole piston housing narrower, or maybe even some weaker springs, it would be good to go.

Pull the Servo out all of the way and recheck the Teflon seals. You may have cut one, probably the largest one on the 2nd Servo.</font>

I got to thinking about what I said W/O taking into account that yours binds in 1st which would NOT be that seal. Sorry. You may just happen to have the longer selctive pin in the Servo, especially if someone worked on it before. You should be able to grind the end of the pin down if need be and try the process over. Just make sure you get to a point where you can turn the driveshaft by hand in both directions and you will be fine. Does it turn free W/O the Servo in place? If not then somehow the band is actually jammed on. I've never seen this before but that doesn't mean that it can't happen.

i didn't actually realize there were different pin lengths until i read it in a tech manual last night. Do you know offhand what's the stock length, so i can measure mine? Unfortunately, I do not know the history of the transmission i rebuilt, so a diffferent pin could very well be the problem. My original 700r4 case and some parts were shot, so a friend donated another 87 core to the cause. She said it was most likely original, with only 100k or so on it, but she did not own the car long when that trans came out.
it does turn fine with the servo out. Like I mentioned, one of the road tests with the car, the snap ring holding on the servo popped about halfway off, and the whole servo assembly had more breathing room, and it did shift 100%. However, it was leaking from the lid, because it was too far out.
leo, you've been a great help. thank you.
