Axle/Gears: 9 Bolt Torsen 3.70
Re: 9 bolt.com

Don't bother. You don't need Glen's help with anything. The 9 bolt has a junk carrier. Get a Torsen from Supa-F Spares for a Holden Commodore VL, and the Motive/Yukon/Summit 3.70 gearset.

The auburn style diff in the 9 bolt is junk, should not be rebuilt, and the one I got from Glen at 9bolt.com was crap. Lasted about 6 months of terrible creaking, groaning, and gnashing. Filled my diff with silver paint. I tossed that garbage - lesson learned - and put in the Torsen. Been good ever since.

Re: 9 bolt.com

The Torsen from Supa-F Spares is the carrier. Motive/Yukon, etc sell the 3.70 gears - that's the only aftermarket ratio available for the 9 bolt.

The thread on my upgrade:

I have read your other thread, and while I don't disagree, I think you got shafted. When I pulled my 9 bolt apart 2 years ago, I ground the lips off the cones and in the carrier, shimmed the spiders and I have been using it ever since with no issues. I just changed the oil in it last weekend after ~15k miles, and there was a little flake in the oil, it wasn't really that bad. I did glue a magnet in the bottom of the case, and this is the second oil change, I think that is the key, frequent changes so the metal can't build up in suspension.
I don't even add the limited slip additive, and I don't get any noise out of it
I am in no way thinking this is going to last me another 100,000 miles and still function as a posi, but it got me some additional life without having to spend much money to keep the two wheel drive.

Re: 9 bolt.com

I certainly did get shafted. Near $450 for a rebuilt 3 series carrier and bearings/seals that lasted a couple thousand miles. I tore it down after the fact and it was DESTROYED. Now I'll be the first to admit I'm not even close to gentle on cars, but this car had a 150k mile LB9 and a completely stock automatic at the time. The gears and my setup of them weren't the issue as they are still in use on the Torsen. I tried 3 different fluids per Glen's recommendations - before he just stopped responding to my emails - nothing helped. It creaked and groaned and popped driving around parking lots. It was honestly embarrassing how loud it was. And then it stopped working and was just open towards the end.

That sucks. I guess he knew he sold something bad, and since he's 1/2 way around the world he knew you can't really come after him so he blew you off.

I plan on doing the torsen type carrier once I get some of my other projects out of the way, but I think I am going to wind up grinding my friends carrier like I did mine, unless he comes up with the cash to buy the torsen by that time comes

Re: 9 bolt.com

What are these different fluids y’all speak of? Are we talking ATF, different gear oil weights?

Re: 9 bolt.com

I just put 80w90 Amsoil gear oil in mine, don't even put in friction modifier with it as per the factory service manual unless it needs it

Re: 9 bolt.com

The Amsoil severe gear has friction modifier already in it. They do make Slip Lock if you want to add more.

With the Torsen nothing special is required. I just run Amsoil 75w90.

Re: 9 bolt.com

I can't find it now, but I don't think I have the sever gear? I bought 5 gallons of gear oil since I had 5 differentials to fill, and one of them was like 3.8 quarts on it's own. I could have sworn it was 80-90, but I don't see it on their site now, so maybe I got 80-140.... ?

**EDIT**
I guess it was "sever gear", but it does not necessarily have the friction modifier already in it, from the site;
"AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR® is compatible with most limited-slip differentials. For applications that require additional limited-slip friction modifier, add AMSOIL Slip Lock®."

Re: 9 bolt.com

I'm an Amsoil dealer. They mean for applications that require additional beyond what's already in it..... it does have the modifier included just some diffs may want more.

But yeah if in doubt add the slip lock. Not going to hurt anything.
