I dont know if it matters or not, but i would think sanding length wise would be better.

Sand WITH the grain, as if you were going around in a big circle on the wheel. If you don't, you'll get all kinds of nasty scratches.

So if I sand with the grain, that would be sanding width-wise correct? And do I buff in the same direction when buffing? Thanks. -89IRO

I did mine from the center to the outside of the rim, lengthwise and they look fine. You wont leave any scratches as long as you do the proper buffing after the wetsanding. Doing the tripoli and the white rouge will clear out any scratches, thats what its for.

O.K., do I sand with the 220 dry to get the machining marks out? And that's what they refer to the "grain" as right? So if I were to sand with the grain, that would be sanding width-wise correct? And yes, I know about the tripoli and whit rouge, I've already got it. See the thing is, yesterday I did my first wheel, but it didn't come back in a mirror finish, so I guess that means I need to sand more. Oh, and are the buffing wheels supposed to turn black? Thanks. -89IRO

Yes, "with the grain" is width wise. And yes, your buffing wheel will turn black, that is oxidation coming off.

Great, thanks for the help guys, I guess it's time to do that wheel over, because it is far from mirror. I hear all the shine is in the sanding. At least the clear coat is already gone, because in my opinion, that is the hardest part, because I have to be soooo careful not to get any on the painted part of the rim. Later. -89IRO
