Aero wing removal
How do I remove the clips from the hatch window without damaging the wing on an 87 formy? My wing needs sanded and painted and I don't have the cash for an aftermarket piece. So I'm going to try to fix it.

It helps if u have 2 people since the wing is big and awkward. First unbolt the wing on both sides from the underside of the trunk there will be round rubber covers over the two bolts. Then just push the wing towards the front of the car and it will slide off.
What other wings will line up with the aero wing holes? I have been searching for awhile and have not found any information on other wings that will line up. Has anyone swaped an IROC wing in place of an Aero wing?

There are actually 4 bolts holding it on - two near the edge and two holding the 3rd brake light to the car (which is also bolted to the wing).
Be really careful pushing it forward if it's still in good condition, because it's really easy to crack the paint by compressing the foam too much.

The third brake light is bolted to the hatch not the wing. The only other wing that might come close to working would be the later thirdgen wrap around wing in the 90's.

hmm, so the CHMSL stays on the declid huh? is it proteced from the weather at all and how tall exactly is it, the reason im asking is because my wing has a small crack starting on the inside edge so I was debating on replacing it with a highrise but I need the highmount to pass inspection. Im just wondering how hard it would be to let that light on there and put the highrise on over top of it to mantain a factory look. Ohh and F355 do you have any closer pics of the rear deck without the wing on it so I can see the holes and stuff so I can get more of an idea of what I want to do as far as my wing goes.

Are u talking about the Z28 hi rise. If so there are a few people on the board with that wing and the third brake light. Maybe someone will chime in with a pic. When i had my wing off i didnt take any up close pics. I took my wing off to see how i would like the hi rise and it just didnt look right so i went back with the aero.

yeah I like both wings alot but dont have the cash right now to buy a replacement aerowing so I thought I would go with the Z28 highrise since Ive seen pics of it before on birds and I like it and its alot less expensive than mine.

The only problem is u have to have make the wing wider to fit a bird. Camaro's are a couple of inches narrower. When i put the wing on my car and got it prefectly centered the bottom of both ends of the wing sit dead center on top of the crack between the hatch and the fender. So u have pretty much the thickness of the rear quater skins with no wing on both sides. The camaro it goes all the way across. You could make a costly mistake thinking it will even come close to working out of the box. The aero wings mounting holes are a about 5 inches off from lining up. You can make it fit and look perfect if u know how use fiberglass.

If cost is a problem buy one of the regular firebird and trans am wings drill some new holes fill in the old ones and the wing will match the car. I see people sale the standard wing for 10-20 bucks they are cheap.

ehh well have to see how things work out, it just pisses me off the wing is cracking already and the guy told me he just put it on a couple months before I bought the car of which I havent even had a year yet.
meridius I have an 89 aero spoiler on my T/A--good shape no splits, but paint cracked on it--just bought a 92 aero spoiler so I might be selling it. Interested? I'm in Pa too so you can come get it.
If so pm me.

91 was the first year for the newer style spoiler. Im actually thinking of getting that one instead of the other style cause i can get it made out of fiberglass so it wont crack like every 87-90 style one does.

Here is my old 86 Trans Am with the 91-92 wing on it.

I didn't need any clips on it since the arms that wrap around the glass are pretty strong, I just put some weather stripping between the spoiler on the glass so it wouldn't rattle on it.
Was stable up to 160mph on my 86.

Zepher--did you use your old hatch? Also--did you have to drill new holes for the spoiler or did it bolt up using your old aero wing bolt holes? I wanna put my 92 aero on my 89 aero hatch.

I had to drill one hole on each side and used one hole on each side from the stock spoiler holes.

And the 3rd brakelight is bolted to the spoiler as well. Otherwise I wouldn't have two thread bolt holes in my old stock wing from my 87.
