Stock Fibre Glass Hood Years?
I just got my 87 Z, and my god is that hood ever HEAVY. It has a fresh paint job, but the guys who did it need to be shot. It'll be getting painted again next spring (This time me and my dad are doing it. And doing it right).
So I figured it would be the perfect time to get rid of that HEAVY hood and get a fibreglass one. I've been reading up, and is it true that the CFI 82-83 camaro's came with a fibreglass hood? What kind of weight savings will that give me? Also, does it bolt right up where my stock one is right now? And issues with using a hood like this? Anything I should look for when going to the wreckers for one of these hoods?
Thanks
Trevor

All 82-83 Z28's, no matter if it was LG4, L69, or LU5 had Fiberglass (or GMs variant of 'glass anyway) hoods...
the LG4/L69 hood does not have anything functional on it
the LU5 hood has the functional vents and the boot for the CFI setup.
They weigh about 20 pounds, but good luck finding one in good condition, they're rare as hell and they get trashed easily
Most people pay upwards of $100 for them, if not more
~~ EDIT ~~
a few things to worry about with the hoods ~
Once one of the hood shocks start to go out, they should both be replaced fairly soon, prolonged times of holding the hood upright with only one good shock will cause a large amount of stress on the hood and it will eventually bow and crack through the middle...
Since its fiberglass, you really have to be careful about shutting the hood sometimes, since they're fairly old you'll have to worry about chipping them and whatnot...
Rocks are also a pain ...
The hoods do not have the holes for the 85+ hood louvers/blisters, they had decals only
Overall they're great lightweight hoods... They bolt up just like any other stock camaro hood will

They are very nice. My 83 L69 came with it. I just sanded it all down to paint it right and found some one had repaired dr corner. Its not surprising but if you can get one its worth it

Here's mine.. 3 small cracks in the middle on the ridge but should be an easy repair with some fiberglass. Other than that, it's good.

Here's mine in its "Just sorta been washed" glory... yeah, the hood has a few chips and that long white spot is actually where it got more or less crushed right off when I had my hood off and someone stepped on it
Full Frontal Nudity!!! (hahaha) ... it shows the chips... on the passneger side by the light on the inside is a chip, and on the drivers side that little strip is about 3 or 4 inches long
Another angle of the chip

Hey slowcamaro! Our cars seem pretty similar, Yours looks nice with the black heritage stripes. one question, did you need to do any adjustments to the hood to fit on your 85? i heard that the hood wont fit on our 2.8 fuel injected cars. i have the hood i just need to paint it and put it on. thanks alot

mine's an 88 and it fits fine. and thanks about the heritage stripes. nobody likes mine. In too many of the pics, the resolution isn't high enough, and since my stripes are so close (they flow around the inlets) they tend to look like a uni-stripe on some pics.

I was told not more than 2 years ago that you can still buy them new from GM for around $300. I haven't confirmed this, but that was coming from an A-Sedan racer. The a/s guys use these hoods because the're factory and they're lighter than a steel hood
