Hidden Aux Input

Anyone looking for some ideas to keep it stock looking this is what I came up with. Found a scrap piece of metal in the garage and made a clip. Easy to get to and not noticeable. Best of all, no cutting or drilling the car involved.

Re: Hidden Aux Input

Why not run a full length cable somewhere hidden?
Im not sure I see the purpose of essentially "adding" a connection where one is not needed..

1) It's needed to automatically switch between auxiliary input and the radio. Without using the female jack changing it over when plugged in, there would need to be a switch somewhere. I'm going for a factory look. I didn't want a switch anywhere.

2) I don't always use it. Often times on short drives I listen to the radio. I don't want any unused wires laying around.

3) If it was only an mp3 player stuffed in the arm rest it would make some sense, but I use my phone with a car dock stuck to the windshield because it does double duty for music and navigation. There's no good way I could think of to hide a wire on top of the dash or one long enough to reach there. With this, I plug the coiled wire from the dock into the jack when I'm using it, and store it away when I'm not.

Thanks for the link. Just skimming thru it, it sounds like you need to run the CD player to have this work.

Re: Hidden Aux Input

That’s awesome 58Mark.. I want to do that so I can put my stock radio back in.. the previous owner put an Alpine with an iPod cable and the only thing that keeps that radio in is the ability to play my awesome 80s playlist on my iPod.. he gave me the stock radio and speakers too.. I used to like the look and sound of the stock system..

Re: Hidden Aux Input

I've searched all weekend and can't come up with a thread that shows how to add an aux input without having to either have a CD or cassette running to make it work. Has anyone?

Re: Hidden Aux Input

KCG, Before I did my conversion, I spent countless hours trying to figure out how to do it without having the cd or tape active. Could not find any info. There are guys on the net that convert radios without the cd or tape, so there must be a way. I would like to find out myself how to do it.

Re: Hidden Aux Input

Has anyone noticed the hole in the bottom of the dashpad? Near the center? Not sure if everyone else has it but that always looked like something should be there, but it would make a good hidden aux spot

It's an ashtray/shifter light on some thirdgens.

Gm used the tiniest bulb, and a goofy lens, so that basically it doesn't do anything. But that's what it is.

Later cars used a self contained light with a plastic lens that snaps in with a 1/4 turn lock. 90-92 Firebirds all have a hole for the light assembly, in the center switch panel, but most don't have anything in the hole since it's redundant with the light in the rearview mirror.
