UQ7 Replacement - Help Needed

Hello All!

Sorry if this has been answered, but I'm pretty new to the world of car audio install. I have been searching high and low on here but cant seem to find an answer to my audio question! My 87 Formula 350 has the UQ7 Performance Audio package, but i have no sound after hooking up an aftermarket head unit. I've been reading that the amps are usually dead on these, so i just want to replace it all instead of messing with it. I want to do new 4x6's in the dash and 6x9's in the sail panel (keeping it simple, without need for an amp)

My question is this: can I use the rear factory speaker wires and UQ7 harness to make this change? or will i need to splice new rear speaker wires into the harness for them to function properly? Thanks in advance!

Re: UQ7 Replacement - Help Needed

I'm guessing that your gonna' want to run fresh wiring for the replacement speakers. The UQ7 speaker system incorporates an 'add-on' harness to the normal factory radio wiring behind the dash housing. That add-on harness then gets run to another UQ7 specific harness for the rear speakers. This is what the UQ7 rear speaker wiring looks like where it connects to the UQ7 dash harness,... and at each rear speaker location:

Dash harness connections:

Pass side rear:

Drivers side rear:

The wiring runs from the pass side rocker, then splits under the rear seat floor area to the drivers side and up to the pass sail panel. Removing the rear seat makes accessing it ( and running new wiring ) pretty easy. Do you HAVE to remove/replace the wiring? NO,... But it's probably going to take just as long to try and make it work as it would to replace it.

Re: UQ7 Replacement - Help Needed

My guess is that your sub's amp is not getting any power. How did you accomplish the wiring from the car to the new head unit?

Here's an adapter harness for installing a 4thgen radio into my 87; I also have UQ7. The connector at the left end fits the car, and the connector at the right end fits the 4thgen radio. The blue wire at the car's end supplies power to the UQ7 amp, but since that wire on the 4thgen side does not supply power(probably not from your aftermarket head unit wiring either), that blue wire had to be cut and spliced into the red power wire on the car's side. I suspect that's your problem.

Pretty sure that would be the PINK wire on the factory plug,... 'switched' power OUT from the radio to AMP and power antenna.

Yes, the blue wire in the adapter harness connects to the car's pink wire. So power needs to get to the pink wire, or the sub's amp won't work.

Re: UQ7 Replacement - Help Needed

thank you everyone! the pictures and wiring descriptions have been a lot of help. I have the adapter harness hooked up, but the car side blue wire is connected to the blue/white wire for my head unit.

I will probably just use all new speakers and wires in the end but I am curious: these wires with blue tape running near the radio pod and under the pass side, they are for the subs right? do they need to connect to the crossover here in order to work?

Re: UQ7 Replacement - Help Needed

The wires you're describing are user-installed not factory. going to have to follow them to find out where they go.

Re: UQ7 Replacement - Help Needed

After talking with John in RI, it would seem I don't have UQ7 factory speakers! Pretty much just the amp and wiring harness are left from the UQ7 setup

Looks like these speakers are hooked to a passive crossover behind the board. The wire pictures i posted earlier seem to be connected to this crossover
