Bass tube in trunk well... How's it sound?

I'm thinking about doing this in order to add a little more bass sound to my current system. I don't really need a real hard hitting system, just a smal improvement in sound. I have a Pioneer head unit with Pioneer speakers. They hit pretty hard but there's really no good bass sound because of the lack of air space behind the 6x9s. Anybody have or had a bass tube in the well in the trunk? How big was it? How did it sound? If I got the Bazooka tube, what's the largest I could get? Thanks in advance.

I'm not a fan of the Bazooka tubes, but I did put a 10" tube with a blaupunkt sub into a friend's TA once. It sounded real good, and hit pretty hard.

I've got a 4 year old Kenwood 8" ported self powered tube in the back of mine that fills in the lows and then some. I think its only 30Wx2 but it still packs a punch. Friends think theres something bigger back there and are amazed when I tell them what it is.

I have a Tube with a perfect 10 in it. (don't do this by the way...they are made for sealed boxes... and you'll blow them left and right)... When it's working and not blown the thing hits very good. I've had countless people go, wow only one ten or you sure thats a 10". At the same time, I've had an eclipse 8" in a virtual box and it almost as hard as the ten

I just put a 10" non-amped Bazooka in my well and it is so much tighter and hits so much harder than my 2 12" subs on a baffle board that I can't believe it! Now I do have to say that the subs were an off brand (Electro-Bass?) and I was using a crappy Jensen 150W amp so that may explain some of it but WOW, what a difference!

I guess your'e right about those boards eh, Jim?

I've heard that the amped tubes come with a cheap amp, better to get it without and add your own and I do think you could squeeze a 12" back there although if your just looking for a "small" improvement, a 10" will make a BIG difference.

I didn't make my countless comments based on what I've heard or what I've been told. I based my comments on first-hand experience. I went through the plate stage like everybody else, and when I went from a plate to a box, all other equipment stayed the same, so I had a perfect sense of exactly what the plate vs. box thing does. My friend's 10" tube hit as hard as my 4 12s, and much harder than my 2 12s on a plate. Quality produces quantity.

Get the Bazookas. I have to 8" ones pushed by a punch 100. Everybody that has heard mine including some car audio buffs said that that I had some really good 10s or 12s. Thier mouths dropped when they see 2 8" Bazookas back there. They fit with plenty of room even with t tops.

Anybody have one that's powered? I want to make this is simple as possible, but if the bazooka amps are pure crap then I want to know before I make any decisions.

Using a powered Bazooka really only saves you 1 speaker wire hookup. For the sake of that, I wouldn't limit yourself. The bazooka amps are not very powerful at all. I took one apart once, and the whole amp fit in my hand.

I've got two (5 year old) 8" kicker sub-stations in the well. As for how hard they hit, With my wimpy little pioneer GM-102 amp (bridged to mono @ 2 ohm) I can make my new alpine CD player skip if I push it more than about 28 on the dial.

I have a 12" bass tube in the well.. being pushed by a MTX amp around 250 watts i think.. i got the tube off of ebay.. for like 45 bux ... came with a crappy "THUMP" sub in it.. its sounded pretty damn good.. till it exploded.. i jus bought a Sony sub... and the thing pounds... pisses me off at times cus i can hear the rattles and it skips the damn cd player.. but it gives u a good range if u only want a little or if u want alot...

IMO it sounds better than my friends cherokee with infinity gold sound system with 2 10s in the back.

bazooka tubes are good... but i think mine beats em out

Mine are in the well area. I have a 12 disk changer, 3 amps, and the 2 8" bazooka tubes back there and they fit with room to spare. the t-top bag still fits perfect. I will try to get some pictures. Everbody that hears them thinks that i have 12s back there and can't believe it's just 8s.

Pictures would be great. I've only seen one picture of a 10" tube and I couldn't see where the amp was mounted.

Sorry for the double post. I might have the pictures tonight. They cost up to $200 new, but find some old blown ones, and put even better speakers in them. A friend blew his and put better subs in, and it sounded a lot better.

I have an old 8" powered Bazooka - it has been in 3 or 4 different cars. I think I paid about $3 or 400 for it 4 or 5 years ago.

It has a built-in 80 watt amp. I use it because it sounds pretty good - I think there is room for improvement, but since I already have it... It also hits pretty hard for a little, under-powered sub.

It recently went south on me. I took it apart and (like Jim said) there is not much to the amp. I am either going to get it fixed (I think a wire is just shorting), or I might look into replacing the speaker with something a little higher quality and using an external amp to run it.

If I had nothing and was going to buy something, I probably would not get a Bazooka and would go after a box. But if you have one or are getting a good deal on one, go for it!
