What is the RIGHT carborator?

Its time to put a new carborator on my 83 305 v8 trans am. when looking for a new carbaortor i found out its not as simple as just saying GM v8. they have all sorts of diffenernt displacement values and such.

Im in California so i cant go nuts with it really. I just want to put a basic, nothing fancy carb on it so i can get the best fuel mileage possible out of it.

What are the stock or correct numbers to look for when searching for a carborator?

Look for a Q-Jet, carb # 17083204

Basically the only one that's legal

what is wrong with the carb you have now? i would rebuild it because i know california is smog heaven but are strict on the laws about emissions. i would stick with what you have and put a rebuild kit in it.

I already rebuilt it and cleaned it thoughly. after the rebuild i took the car in to have the carb adjusted. I was then told that there is something internally wrong with the carborator and a kit would not fix the problem. The only way that carborator will be fixed is though a complete rebuild. the kind that companies like Holly do.

Unless you have a Canadian T/A, it's probably a good idea just to buy a rebuilt CC Q-jet.

As five7kid frequently points out on this board, it's more trouble and money to switch everything to non-CC than it is just to use the stock CC Q-jet. Not to mention the stock carb flows more than enough air for a 305.

Well the rebuilt CC QJets are not cheap, but it would be a surefire way to get a carb that works if you want to stay with a Computer QJet.

Use the carb setup you want to use on your car, not the carb other people try to convince you to use. It's not that much trouble to switch to non-computer controlled carburation.

You can't switch to a non-computerized carb. You're in an "enhanced" emissions area in California. They'll not only check to be sure that every wire and hose is hooked up to it in its factory location, they'll even check the part # on your carb. It will need to be one on a very short list in order to pass.

Fix what you've got, or replace it with an identical one. Those are you only choices.

There is no cuttoff on car year in California? In most states once a car reaches a certain age it is exempt. When Florida had emissions they did it that way. Don't know about California.

In California, it's about 1973 IIRC.

Why would you want to, though? Instead of using money to convert to non-CC parts, he could just buy a rebuilt Quadrajet and spend the rest on stuff that he really wants.
