air gap intake, stoke hood

I,m putting my motor in this weekend. The thing is will a air gap intake and carb fit under a stoke hood and is the air gap better than the regular performer?

The Air Gap is a better manifold, performance-wise, because it will keep the intake charge cooler, because the ports and carb are not in contact with the same metal that is covered in hot oil, or has hot coolant passing through it. It also has no exhaust crossover. Also, the fact that air can pass through the outside of the manifold would also have a cooling effect too.

As for fitting.... Camaro or Firebird? What carb are you using? What air cleaner are you using?

I'd actually like to know the answer to this as well, because I've been toying with the idea of getting one to replace my Torker in the spring.

** forgot to ask... 'Performer Air Gap' or 'Performer RPM Air Gap'? It may or may not make a difference, I dunno, but can't hurt to have more info.

It fits, but you have to use the right air cleaner.

i just put a carbed motor in my 88 camaro with the Performer RPM air gap intake and a Holley 750 double pumper. I went ahead and bought a cowl hood for mine because it didnt look like it would fit once I put the air breather on. But im sure with the right carb/air breather combo you could make it fit.

The intake is a Performer Air Gap intake. I'm useing a Edlebrock 600cfm carb. The air cleaner is a drop cleaner. Oh yeah, I alson am not going to use any spacers what so ever. As soon as its in I'll let u know Air_Adam. Hope it works. Will know Sat.

For what it is worth the RPM AirGap is 15/16ths of an inch taller than the regular Performer intake. I measured both on my car when I switched them. When I had a 600 Edelbrock carb I had to run a one inch spacer under the Edelbrock drop base air cleaner. The fuel inlet interfered with the air cleaner base. Could only fit a 2 inch tall filter under the hood. Maybe this can be changed but I just saw it as one more good reason to ditch the Edelbrock carb. You put a 2 inch filter in a drop base aircleaner and the lid is probably less than an inch from the top of the carb. Not great for air flow.

With the Demon carb I am running now I can run a 3 inch filter on top of the RPM AirGap and fit it under the stock 86 IROC hood.

Air Adam it works just fine. I put my hood back on today and it fit just perfect. Iused a drop edlebrock breather with a 3 inch air filter. So people who says it want work it does.

I'm running a holley 750 VS on top of the RPM intake (not the air gap) with an open element edelbrock air cleaner, under a stock Z 28 hood. That air cleaner has more dimples in it than a fat ladys ^$$. Oh and don't buy that filter. It comes apart and cruds up the carb.

It is right on and perfect. It's actually easy to go to rich with it but it's tunability is flat out awesome. I love Holley and this VS 750.

Thanks. I guess I just need to try and set the hood on. That will remove all doubt.

It will fit. The only thing that touches on mine is the wing nut. It has put a little indention in my hood insulator. When u look at the car with the hood off u think no way this is going to work, but it does. The only concern would be the new motor mounts. Mine where the orginals. Let me know if it clears with the new mounts.

I looked at it again last night. No way the 3" filter will work. It should work with a 2" and still have enough air space.

The fuel fitting interfering with the air cleaner housing issue can be solved with a banjo fitting that gets the fuel ine out of harms way.

The overall fitment of a drop-base cleaner can be solved with a Mr. Gasket 1/2 inch plastic riser, and dropping to a 2 1/2 inch element. That way, you'll clear all the linkage and choke stuff, but maintain the same overall height.

This was my solution on my Performer RPM intake (same height as the Air Gap), Edelbrock 1406, and drop-base cleaner housing - it all fits fine under my stock hood.

the only air cleaner assembly that worked perfectly for clearance under my stock hood with rpm airgap and holley 650 dp, also when i had the edelbrock 600, and 650 thunder series...........was the edelbrock 10 X 2 open element air cleaner assemby. THe mr gasket 10X2 wont fit.

I use the low profile fitting that edelbrock sells for their manifolds and holley style carbs for my PVC and the ftting on the baseplate for my power brakes.

I have the Performer RPM QJet, Qjet carb, and 3" K&N with a 1.25" drop base and it fits under a Z28 blister hood...but barely. I checked with the ol' playdoh trick and I have about 1/4" clearance at the front section of the air element.
