Choke light came on!

I have an 87 camaro with 5.0 carbed. A couple nights ago on a WOT run at about 60 the choke light came on and it bogged and is now acting like the choke is stuck on. I am new to carbs and need to know what i need to do to go about fixing this.

The choke light is mislabeled... its actually the alternator light - meaning your alternator is not charging. You say it happened after a WOT run, I'd be willing to bet your alternator belt flew off. Had that happen to me before.

Choke light will come on when alt isnt charging.

Check for loose wires or belt thats flown off.

Ive had my bely fly off a few times on a good pull before i managed to get everything aligned 100%

Most likely your alternator has died. Go to Autozone or Advance and have them check your charging system.

Alright, just got back from checking with a meter and all seems to be charging right. I get a little over 12v at the battery when off and a little over 14v at the battery when running. Any other suggestions?

Check your charging system... if that checks out, check for 12v to the choke coil.

Any competent repair shop can give you a total rundown of your charging/electrical system for like $20. Condition of the alt, battery, starter, etc.

Does the SES light come on? Check to see if any codes are stored.

No SES. Can anyone tell me where the choke coil is?

The choke coil is inside the black choke housing on the passenger side of the carb.

I had mine come on when the wire shorted out on metal. Take a look and see if has come off and melted on the headers or what not.

Coke coil could have also shorted out. To check that just unplug it and see if the light goes out.

Alright guys. I found elecdtrical tape around the wires that plug into the choke coil. They seem to be fraid and i will take a close look at the problem tomorrow.

Just disconnect the choke coil wire while the engine is running and test for power with a volt meter. You can't do it unless the engine is running, the choke only gets power with the engine running... its a fail-safe, so that the choke won't open up if you leave the power on for awhile w/o the engine running (ie. listening to radio or something).
