carb troubles

I've got an edelbrock 750 4bbl carb
#1407 which is acting up on me. The car surges and misses throughout the rpm range, if there is a load on the engine it will backfire. I swapped carbs to my old carter AFB and the problem dissapears.

I checked primary and secondary jets, blew air threw everything, but that didn't do anything, i checked floats to see if gas leaked into them,

has anyone encountered a problem like this? it almost seems like an ignition miss, however all ignition components have been replaced, thats how i figured out it was a carb prob

what could be causing my backfire, missing and rough idle? any ideas?

It's lean. Could be a bad vacuum leak. If it was a Holley I could help more.

I agree it's probably running lean. THere should be no smoke coming out the 'pipes while this is happening. If you're getting clouds of black smoke out the back it's too rich. But it sounds like typical lean symptoms to me.

What could be causing it? About a dozen different things. Metering block gaskets could be bad, installed correctly or misaligned. Could be there's dirt wedged in places the compressed air couldn't blow it out of. Etc., Etc. Maybe if we had a little more info about the exact circumstances surrounding the problem. The more info the better. No detail is unimportant.

an Edlebrock #1407 does not have a metering block/gasket.
Sounds like you didn't get "everything" cleaned out.

My #1406 does the same thing.
It's driving me crazy.
Runs ok for a while, then starts to run like crap.
If it starts to bog and backfire and I go WOT it doens't bog or backfire. As soon as I let up and accelerate easily it will start to bog and backfire.
It seems to happen when the motor gets warm.
The gauge reads 160-180 on the cluster, but the engine bay seems very hot.
I also have an open element air cleaner. Could all that hot air be causing the car to run like it does?
I can't wait till I can afford to get a TPI setup for my car, maybe then all my headaches will go away.
When the car runs like crap, it makes me not want to drive it anymore, I just get all frustrated.

Zepher,
you will get a great deal more headaches with tpi.
Why not just find what's wrong with your carb and fix it? chances is are it just has to do with you maybe not keeping the air or fuel as clean as it needs to be to prevent clogging of the carb passages like the air-bleeds. It only takes about 15 minutes to remove and disassemble the carb and clean out everything.
good luck,
ODB

I'll try and tear her apart and clean her up and see if that fixes the problem.
I just want to get TPI for the fuel economy right now, since gas is up to $1.59 for 87 and $1.74 for 93.

I would recommend selling it and buying a Holley. I bought a Edelbrock and bolted it on right out of the box and it was horrible. It ran so bad I sold it and went to a Holley. When I figured out what was wrong I was amazed. The Fuel bowl levels were way off from one another and the bowl drop was off. This should have been set correct straight from factory. Sell it or junk it and buy new, you will never be disappointed.

I suggest you guys all sell your Edlebrock carbs to me really cheap. Even though it's usually only dirty airbleeds that cause the problems, you really don't want those low-performance Edlebrock carbs.

If anybody wants to sell theirs just shoot me an email and we can negotiate.
thanks..

I like the edelbrock carbs too. They are not complex and are eas to take apart and tune. IMO

------------------
I WOULD RATHER PUSH A CAMARO THAN DRIVE AN IMPORT

1983Z28 350w/ edelbrock performer RPM power package with 64cc aluminum heads, dynomax shorty headers, 700R-4 with shift kit, 750cfm carb, edelbrock 3" exhaust system, ASCD SS hood, 16" IROC rims.

future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames, Hurst shifter, dakota digital gauge package, procharger supercharger.
