Need help/info

I have a '85 TA with a 305 TPI out of a '89. The electronics and computer is still the stock '85's It has no cold start injector. It is a pain in the @$$ to start. Is it possible to burn a PROM for a '85 with the fuel enrichment program in it? I have no idea how Prom burning works.

Thanks

Matt

Can anybody help me? I'm completely new at this.

It'd be easier and cheaper (in the long run) to switch to the 165 ECM, then you'd be able to use much better programming (bin files).

Thanks for the help.
Does the 165 connect directly to the '85 harness with a mods?

Yes, it is a simple swap of about 10 pins and about 4-6 splices and adding 2 relays that do away with the expensive MAS module that is piggybacked on your ECM.
Look here for the low down. http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap/

Ignore the part about getting the wiring for the relays from a "donar" car and about putting them in the engine compartment. Pepboys sells the plugs for the relays and the relays themselves. Instead of making a new hole in the firewall to put the relays in the engine bay I just mounted them to the bracket that the MAS module was on, then the wiring that comes with the relay plugs is all you'll need to wire them in.

About how long and how much will this take. I'm kinda low on funds right now. Also, how hard is this? I'm pretty good with electrical work, but messin around with the engine harness might be a little beyond me. Especially the "repinning", what is that?

Thanks for the help and info.

If you do the splices like on that web page (crimp on splices) I'd guess the whole thing would take 2 hours if you took your time and labeled all the wires that you are going to move around. I personally don't like crimp on splices and don't trust them. So I carefully cut the insulation in the "middle" of the wires about 1/2" long and solidered the wires, then wrapped in a good quality electrical tape.
Repinning is just that, there are several pins in the ECM connectors that have to be put in other locations. These pins are a snap to get out of the connectors, just remove the "combs" on either side of the connector and using a small jeweler's screwdriver or similar, you find the little lock tang that keeps the pin in place and depress it while GENTLY pulling on the wire.

Be sure to mark the pins with their remove from location and with their to be installed location (eg D4-A15). That way if you ever need to go back to the old ECM you'll have a good idea of what went where.

The cost? Figure on about $65 for a 165 ECM and memcal from either E bay or possibly someone on these boards selling one.

2 relays at about $14 each
2 relay connectors at around $24 each (expensive little buggers) but there is a cheaper way, you just have to be darn sure of the relay pinouts.

After that you'll be set to mod your engine and start burning proms.

Sure, there are also a lot of others here that have done this swap. I just did mine a couple of months ago, so it is all still fresh in my mind.
