ALDL Datalogging with a TI-89 Calculator?
Does anyone think that it would be possible to build a cable and configure the TI-89 to datalog through the ALDL port. I think that it would work but might take some time to get it figured out. Let me know what you guys think. If you guys that know more about the ALDL data than I do think it will work, I'll start trying to figure it out. Just let me know.

That would require an assembly program, right? Either way, it's probably do-able. I have a TI-89 but my XP240 does such a good job for hand-held purposes I couldn't motivate myself to switch.

I've figured out for sure that it would work. It would just take a lot of time to get the program and cable interface made to let it work. Now I've kind of changed my mind, I think it would be simpler to make it datalog through a PalmPilot or other type of PDA. I'm still looking into the calculator though. The 3D graphing of the TI-89 would make it almost perfect for the job. Using a PDA would require a little more software I think to make it work. I'll let you guys all know if I get anything more figured out.

It should be able to run on the TI-83+ also, but it won't have the 3d graphing capabilities that the TI-89 does. I'm just getting started on this project so it could be awhile before I get it all figured out, designed, and working.

i think when me and Tom were talking about datalogging there was a post or a link to a site that already had software for a TI8x/9x...but don't quote me on that

i used to program for the TI86 in assembly, and the serial support was great.
If you need some code samples to check out, I wrote a TCP/IP infrastructure for it back when i was a sophomore in highschool (like '99).. It will take some searching, but I should be able to find it...
Isn't Moate's scan written in BASIC? TIBASIC is pretty cake.. you should be able to "steal"
some of the logic. (Just give credit where credit is due, of course)

Ya, I really don't think it will be that hard once I get started. For the serial port the TI calculators have the I/O port, making a cable to communicate from the ALDL to the calc shouldn't be too difficult. If all else fails I have the Calc->USB cable, I can make a USB to serial adaptor and just go from there.
If moates is software is written in basic that is probably the best thing I've heard so far.
lol Won't take me long then.
If you think your code would help me go ahead and email it to me if you can find it. I was using the files off of ticalc.org to look at to get started.

The interface cable would be a challenge, but has anyone thought about porting everything into a WindowsCE handheld. I am sure it wouldn't take much time to port WinALDL, however the moates software may need a little updating.
It may be easier to buy a LCD and use a microchip PIC, maybe a 16F628. It has a built in USART function, cheap, free development environment with assembler, and a programmer can be homebuilt from free specs online. For the interface TI makes a chip like the MAXIM 232 and the TI is cheaper. I am going to start on one once I get done painting my car, but sinve I bought an Atmel development board, I will be using the Atmel microcontroller. If you want data logging, it would probably be easier to write a program to use on a laptop.

Hey Don416 I allso have the Atmel development kit what are you planning to do as far as DIY PROM is concerned? maybe we can collaborate on a project??
It's been collecting dust for awhile (to many other things with more priority) but i've been wanting to do something with it for awhile now. Let me know!
