Unable to datalog with Auto Prom
I am having a trouble with my Auto Prom. I can emulate and record the ALDL info that way, but if I switch the horizontal switch over to bypass mode and put switch from auto Prom to Max232, I am unable to connect with the ecm and it will also not find the attached hardware when it is in bypass mode. Has anyone else had a fix for this?
Are you using a max 232 based cable?
The AP comes with a cable for use in the "Autoprom" setup IIRC. I think you can use different software like winaldl but then in the bypass mode. Never tried. Mine works fine in the AP mode. Usually it's a few settings that are off that causes the problems.

Check that your comm port settings are correct.
That's probably what it is. took me a few things to change to get everything right.
It won't find the hardware in Max232 mode (bypassed) the identification is only used in AP mode from what I've seen.
see what control panel shows under your device in AP mode.
That will give you the comm port to setup with in bypass(IIRC)
If you have the USB version it may be that it went to comm 5 or something.

If datalogging with TunerPro then you have to change the cable type in preferences. Either "Autoprom" or "Max232". Also, disconnect the Autoprom from the USB when you switch it to bypass, then plug it back in. I had the same issues and that fixed it.

In bypass mode, JP86SS is probably correct, you have to have the correct COM port settings. Most likely it is either COM3, COM4, or COM5. Hit the test button with different ports until you find the one the AutoProm is on.

I have the DB9 Auto Prom version, not USB. I know it is on the correct com port because I can switch the switch to Auto Prom mode and the cable type back to AutoProm, attach the ribbon cable and it will work and datalog fine.
So are you saying that The Auto Prom in bypass mode acting as a regular MAX232 cable does not need to be initialized? It says "no hardware found" when I try to.
Another problem I am having is that I can only emulate with TunerPro Version 3.1 not 4.0. Version 4.0 will upload the file (bin) to emulator but will always report back failed. I then go to version 3.2 and it will work fine.

O, I am being serious here. Once today when I turned tunerpro to ALDL and then got to the show values, it showed the values in Chinese. No joke!

Could help it
In bypass mode the Autoprom is "non-existent" so it will just act like a cable. Nothing to initialize.
I've never had a problem with pass through mode on mine but i'm using the usb.
Maybe check that the "flow control" is set to "none", or try the "hardware" then "software" setting.
I'm not sure if running a baud rate higher than 115K works or not with std cable mode. Might try it at 9600 and turn down the "FIFO" buffers a bit.
I'm thinking the AP is much better at handling the bufferring of the port better than straight pass through.

When in passthrough mode, TunerPro will not initialize the hardware. This is expected.
As far as the Chinese - I don't have a response here. Perhaps you have a language pack installed that interferes with the UI. Still strange, as TunerPro uses the ASCII char set, not unicode/wide.
