How to removed cruise control harness
How to removed cruise control harness
Hi,.. I am in the process of cleaning my engine compartment. I was curious as to how exactly to remove the cruise control stuff. I removed the unit. Now, my questions are,..... there is a 5 wire male connector. I want to remove that. I was thnking of cutting it back, but I want to be sure there is ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE of it ever starting a fire. I'd like to cut it back to the firewall, and tape off the ends.
Second, there is what appears to be a large vaccum hose. It runs with the wire back to the firewall by the streering shaft. Anyway, how do i remove it? Do i cut it back to the wall and then cap it? Or do i remove it from inside the car? I don't want it to leak.,,, and i want it done the right way. I have a supercharger.
Third, there is what appears to be a double ground wire coming from the same loom or harness, near the firewall, and it attaches to the fender. Should I leave it intact or remove it? Does it ground something other than the cruise control also? What is the safe way to do it?
Please only answer if you know for sure what the proper safe way to do it is. I've seenn cars burn before, and i don't want mine too. Too much into it. Everyone i talk to says they think i can snip them and it "should" be fine. That answer isn't good enough for me
thanks very much, any help is greatly appreciated/
--Oh also: there is a 4 port connector (2 male and 2 female) pin type connector, with 1 black and 1 blue/black wire coming into it. I believe it was for the a/c before i removed it. Anyway,.. do you know how to eliminate this safely????? thanks

when I removed the cruise harness from a 87 TPI trans am, I simply unplugged it from the brake switches and theres another plug to, also you have to remove the vacuum line from a brake switch then theres a ground wire near the back side of the drivers side fender near the relays then simply pull the whole harness out and put a rubber plug in the harnesses hole.

that's great info thanks. But a couple of questions. Do you have to "cap" the vaccum line where you remove it? And where is the brake switch exactly, and how do you get to it? and what about the a/c connector in my original post. thanks -Justin

look right by the brake pedal itself and you will see the switches and you will also see the cruise harness coming from through the firewall. as for the a/c plug, I believe the 4 pin one connects to the ecm, DONT mess with it or when you turn a/c on ecm will not turn the engines rpm up

Im am also in the process of removing my cruise control and AC stuff.
AC is out, AC control unit wiring it out, non AC controls wired up, next i need to remove all the wiring for the compressor and any onther wiring that was once used by the AC.
I have removed my cruise control parts but have not touched the wiring yet so am more posts on this topic will be much appreciated. I know there is a lot of vacuum hoses and wiring that i can get rid of by removing the AC and CC. Also, you might want to think about adding a manual fan switch if you already havent, pretty straight-forward, just have to ground one of the Fan Relay wires, i used a inline 20A fuse and a 20A max rated toggle switch.
About the old cruise control vacuum lines, you have to plug them, but when i was analyzing the vacuum setup there is a vacuum tap in the back of the intake manifold that supplies vacuum to AC control unit and the cruise control, and as far as i can see, nothing else. If you can, just remove the tap from the intake and cover it up with a bolt, thats what im going to do if everything checks out right. I have to wait another week until school is out and i can get back home to work on my car.
Keep the posts coming, i want my car to look like it came from the factory without AC or CC.

That would be awsome, I need some pics if you can, still trying to figure out if the wiring is there for it in my car or not. just a quick glance I don't see the harness that plugs into the servo, is that what comes thru the fire wall from the brake pedal along with the vacum line???

hey sorry about that man, i totally forgot....i was able to remove the vacuum tank and the cruise control controller (whatever that thing is called new the vapor canister) and the wiring harness for it but i realized that there is much more wiring up under the dash that i wasnt able to remove. So what i removed is definately not the complete system. I will be willing to sell the harness and "controller" with the linkage and the vacuum tank although i broke off the fitting when i was removing it, might be able to glue it back on. If you want this stuff let me know, ill be going back home from college for thanksgiving break in about a week so i can get everything together. I will see it for cheap, just give me $5-10 bucks and pay for shipping and its yours, and im sure shipping wont even be that much.

One more thing I need is the electronic crusie module thats directly behind the A/C consel, should be able to get at it from the top under the top dash board. (might be deeper, may have to reach in, but it will be braketed to the back of the A/C consol.)
There will be a wire harness going up the column to the crusie switch, if you can pull that, that would be helpful, it unplugs about 5 inchs below the arm in the colum, should lead you back down to the bottom where there might be other crusie stuff you can pull.
Last but not least, I need the crusie parts that are on the brake pedal braket, down by the fire wall, like the valve and vacum hose.
Two bad you don't have a digital camara so I could see what broke, but for $5 bucks I'll take that part w/ braket and linkage. Let me know on price for the other stuff.
If that harness was just unpluged and taken out, i'll buy that too, but if it was cut it won't do me any good. Any and all vacum lines.
The main thing to work on is that electronic module, have to get it from the top, so if you where thinking of putting in new speakers LOL heres your chance while you have the top board off.

You can remove the servo (don't make a vacum leak), you can remove the linkage, the electronic module, and vacum line and wires.

im in school right now but will be going home during thanksgiving break. Im thinking that i cut the harness in order to remove it but it can just be reconnected to the connector. On the vacuum tank i broke the nipple that the vacuum line was connected to when i tried to pull out the hose, it was like the thing was welded on there. No sure if u can fix this or not. Ill try to organize everything when i go home the only thing is i plan on installing my ProBuilt tranny and ACT torque converter over the break so hopefully i will have time to do the cruise control stuff too.

do you mean the vacum tank or the servo that has the linkage??
Because you need that vacum tank for your car.

why do i need that vacuum tank, in the diagrams i have it is only used for cruise control. I have emilinated everything that goes to the vacuum port at the back of the intake so i have that capped.

Well did you break the fitting on the vacum tank or the servo(w/ linkage) If it was the vacum tank then we are all good cause I don't need the big ball tank.
Justin 87 GTA, the servo has linkage that goes from it to the butterfly, follow it back and you will find it either on the left or right side of the engine compartment.
