Couple of questions here, what year iroc did the cluster come out of. Did you replace the oil pressure sending unit like the article said, did you check the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Tape on the back of the cluster for any tears. Did you check the wiring for the tach?

the iroc was an 87, and i did replace the oil pressure sending unit, and there are no tears, and the white wire is plugged up for the tach

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Since they are both on the same unit, I'd suspect a bad power feed or ground connection.

So it sits at 0, and when you put the key in the "ready" position it jumps to 7000?

My tach was being stupid, it would sit at 6500 with the key out, and when the key was put in "ready" it would go to 7000.

As per someones advice, I pulled my gauge faceplates off, used my finger to turn the tach needle to 0, start the car, and the tach worked. Not sure if this is the same thing.
