Battery voltage drop?!?!
Battery voltage drop?!?!
So me and my grandpa (macanic) had to re-wire the fuel pump so it works and as doing so we wired up my outlets in my 4th gen console( 2 outlets) Before the pump was rewired i would run anywere between 12-16 amps or volts which ever the gauge reads. And now after driving it after the rewireing im at 8 on the guage. after driving for about 30 minutes i was under the red and my dash was barely visable, my head/tail lights were basically out. the radio wasnt even turned on from the massive drop. Any clue how to get power back? im recharging it but that isnt worth it cause it was charging for awhile yesterday

Re: Battery voltage drop?!?!
check your grounds and you may have a short. also check the alternator might be on its last leg
Re: Battery voltage drop?!?!
i just got a new battery about 6 months ago and a new alternators about a year ago. before i start the engine the gauge reads 14 and then i start it and its right at 8. i dont want to drive it because it will basically die.

Re: Battery voltage drop?!?!
Take the alternator to a parts store and have it tested. Parts like to go bad at really inconvenient times, like when you're working on an entirely different part of the car, so then you think its what you were working on.
Re: Battery voltage drop?!?!
ok ill take it to autozone tomorrow. if nothing is wrong with it do you think it could be because we wired up 2 outlets? just to cig lighters used for charging phones if needed. so most of the time they arent being used

Re: Battery voltage drop?!?!
did you find your problem,, if not check your fusable links at the starter, sounds to me like you shorted something and blew a link. that is the only reason I can come up with. the alternator will not put out a charge if is does not detect a power system (ie the battery) and all of the power to the alternator starts at the battery to the starter then on into the system. try running a jumper from the battery + (positive post) to the Alternator see if that gets things on track, if so get under the car and find out which link is bad

Yeah actually fuse links are a good suggestion, I had a taurus I thought the alternator was out on so I changed it but it turned out it was the link that sits on the side of the fuse box.

no i don't, but you can find it easy enough. get to your starter there is some 10 guage wires, 2 or 3 "connected along with the battery cable" give each of them a little tug if one or more seem to stretch and spring back you have found your problem

Re: Battery voltage drop?!?!
It has nothing to do with your currrent situation. Check the little power distributor (not sure of technical name) by the battery. If you're facing the car it's to the right of the battery. Make sure that nut is really tight.
