I replaced the socket for the radiator fan relay, and it worked fine for a while. Then the relay burned out. I just replaced the relay this spring in May. Maybe it was because I was messing with it.. plugging it in and out etc. before I replaced the socket. Any input would be appreciated.

 

 

Not sure how to answer that. The relay that plugs into the socket just stopped working.

 

replace the relay , take the old one apart and see what happened whether its the contacts or coil that went

 

The only way I can see how to take it apart is to break it open with a hammer or something like that.

 

I busted it open with a hammer. The coil as far as I can see looks good. No visiable signs of "burning". The contacts look like they are intact also. There is some discoloration in the white plastic. Kind of brownish where the red wire contact is.

 

brownish spot could be your problem area,by the way you didnt need to use the hammer the white bottom slides out from the black cover

 

There was no way to slide the white bottom would slide out of the cover. It was pressed in very snugly. Made in India. The old socket had melting where the red wire was connected. I'm gonna replace the fan motor. I checked the wiring, and it was good. No resistance. I have probably put stress on the motor by having it on constantly.

 

 

wondering if maybe your fan motor's on its way out? seen in some cases where a failing motor draws more amperage than what it was rated for and causing issues with relays/fuses. definitely shouldn't be killing relays that quickly (unless you were unfortunately stuck with a dud)

 

I think I'm gonna replace the fan motor. The relay was in the old socket before I installed the new one. The old socket had heat issues. There was melting around the red wire tab. I don't know if the old socket was bad and caused the relay to burn out, or the fan motor is drawing too much do to it being bad.
