How many wires go to the starter on a 92 RS Camaro?

Re: Wiring problem

There are 2 studs on the starter - one larger one smaller. The purple wire is the ONLY wire that goes to the smaller stud. On the larger stud goes the pos batt cable, and the fusible links (don't remember how many there are).

Re: Wiring problem

Comes from the driver side firewall connector - exact path of travel I'm not sure - it's a good sized wire, I'm assuming it's in the loom that runs behind engine.

Re: Wiring problem

Do you have the right starter? There are 2, one for a 153 tooth flywheel, and a 168 tooth flywheel.

Is it shimmed according to directions?

If it's 'grinding', then I assume it's turning - if it were an issue of higher compression motor, the starter would not grind, but it would have a very hard time turning the motor over.

Re: Wiring problem

If it's the factory motor, then you have a 153 tooth flywheel. But your sig states 350 - if it's an older 350 that was swapped in, then you might have a 168 tooth flywheel - depends on the year of the motor.

You'll need to get starter to match your flywheel, which is motor dependant - twp piece rear main seal motors had a different flywheel that one piece rear main seal motors.

Easiest thing is an aftermarket starter - most fit both - I grabbed one from ebay, mini-torque high power job, 2/3 the size of OEM, 1/2 the weight, twice the torque, $80.

Re: Wiring problem

Then more than likely you have a 168 tooth flywheel, and need a starter for such. If you asked for a 3rd gen Camaro starter, then you got the wrong one. You need a starter for a 1979 chevy anything.

Re: Wiring problem

In the picture the 2 large wires go to the big bolt and the purple wire goes above on the small one.

Re: Wiring problem

I'm pretty sure that even IF you had a 153 tooth flywheel, that the 168 tooth starter would not engage the teeth enough to 'grind' so to speak, might spin up against it, but I don't think the teeth from starter gear would intertwine any at all with the flywheel teeth - but I'm not sure.

Wish I could 'pop' over and take a look - but that's quite a haul from NC, and then I'd have to spend the night, and my snoring would keep you up all night, and ....
