blowing ACC fuse

I recently purchased a 91 Z28. The 20amp ACC fuse was blown when I got it. I know that the hatch works off of it, but what else does? At first, I could put a new fuse in, use the hatch release switch, then it would blow again. Now as soon as I put a fuse in, it blows as I slide it in.

I noticed that my door lock switches and power mirrors don't operate, do those run off of this too?

What's the deal and what all does this operate so I can try to find the issue?

Re: blowing ACC fuse

Unplug the power connector to your cigarette lighter.

The lighter is a frequent offender when the issue is a blown accessory fuse.

With the lighter connector unplugged, install a fresh 20A fuse, and see if the problem disappears.

Re: blowing ACC fuse

There is a short to ground somewhere on the circuit. Try the lighter disconnect and see what happens. If it still blows then you have to look elsewhere. See what else is on that circuit and start unplugging all those things. unplug as many as you can and then try it again. if the fuse does not blow then start plugging things back in. You should find the culprit by process of elimination.

If its the lighter then let me know because I am parting a 91 camaro and will have parts if you need them

Re: blowing ACC fuse

No problem. When a fuse blows as soon as it is inserted into the fuse block then there is most likely a short to ground meaning that a positive 12V wire is touching ground someone in the car. it could also be something electrical is broken internally so bad that the both the positive side and negative side have either melted together or are touching somehow. I have seen this happen with headlight switches.

What ever you do, DO NOT use a higher amp rating fuse then what is supposed to be in there.

Ended up being the lighter just as you said. Unplugged it, don't need it anyways. Appreciate it man.

Glad it worked out easy for you. If you decide you need a lighter for a charger or something then let me know. I have one from my 91 I am parting out. pay for the shipping charges and its yours.
